Serves as maintenance technician performing highly skilled, master level mechanical and technical diagnostic work in the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses malfunctions in automotive equipment; removes and replaces worn or broken parts, and replaces fluids. Performs specialized projects requiring a high degree of automotive fabrication and customizing skills. Work is performed under minimal supervision.


This is highly skilled and responsible technical supervisory work in directing the activities of the City's automotive repair and maintenance shop. Work involves planning, directing, assigning, scheduling and participating, when needed, in the work of mechanics in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment. Work also involves the responsibility for the efficient performance of a variety of automotive repair and machinist's tasks under the diagnosis of complex equipment malfunctions. Responsibility extends as well to the preparation and maintenance of service records; requisitioning or purchasing, and custody of replacement and repair parts, materials, and supplies; and preparation of labor and cost records and basic work budgets. Work is performed with latitude for independent judgment and action and is reviewed by a superior through conferences, reports, and by inspection of repaired work.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney (Martinsville, VA)

The City of Martinsville is seeking an individual for Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney. Must be member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar. Criminal prosecution/defense experience desired but not a requirement. Responsibilities involve extensive trial work in all courts in the prosecution of felony and misdemeanor cases, providing assistance to law enforcement, the general public and any other duties assigned by the Commonwealth's Attorney.

CITY ENGINEER (Martinsville, VA)

Performs highly varied and complex engineering duties in connection with the planning, design, improvement, and inspection of engineering and construction projects in the City, with particular emphasis on transportation and infrastructure. Work also involves providing technical support in responding to citizen concerns pertaining to drainage, erosion, traffic, utility systems, or other departmental issues. Supervision may be exercised over other personnel of a lower classification. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works.

Code Compliance Inspector (Martinsville, VA)

Performs highly responsible, skilled, technical, and administrative work within the Community Development/Inspections Department. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing inspections of buildings and properties for compliance with federal and state codes and local ordinances. This position requires certification and demonstrated skills in construction, building codes, related laws, public education, media relations, administrative tasks, and strong customer service skills. This position requires knowledge of the methods of investigation utilized in code compliance inspections.

Performs responsible skilled electronic and electrical work in the installation, maintenance and
repair of various types of electronic transmitters, receivers, recorders, motors and electrical distribution
components. Work is performed under the supervision of the Water/Wastewater Plant Maintenance

Electric Line Worker/Technician (Martinsville, VA)

Journey-level Electric Line Worker certification from a regionally or nationally accredited program preferred, but not required.


The City of Martinsville Fire & EMS Department, is testing for current part-time and full-time positions. Minimum requirements: possess a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid Virginia driver's license, have current Virginia firefighter/EMT and/or Paramedic certification(s), and pass a satisfactory employment and background investigation. Preference given to applicants holding ALS certifications.

Starting part-time pay range - $15.79 to $18.53/hour, based on Virginia firefighter/EMS certification.
Minimum starting pay - $37,736 (FF/EMT) to $48,267(FF/PM) annual, based on Virginia firefighter/EMS certification.

Laborer (Part-Time) (Martinsville, VA)

Performs routine transportation work, including roadside clean-up and property maintenance. Work may frequently involve the performance of manual duties and may be routine and repetitive in nature. Work also involves the use of some acquired skills and some manipulative skills. Work involves the supervision of City inmate labor. Work is typically performed under the general supervision of the Street Cleaning crew supervisor.

Lead Telecommunications Installer (Martinsville, VA)

The successful candidate for this position is able to work in a fast-paced time sensitive environment. Police Officer (Martinsville, VA)

The City of Martinsville, VA, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Police Officer. For in-state applicants, possess a current Virginia law enforcement certification or have relinquished certification within two years preceding date of hire. Must have completed one consecutive year of sworn service upon completion of a field training program. Must have left former agency in good standing to be considered. High school diploma or GED; must be a US citizen; successful applicants must pass a physical agility test, possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver's license with no more than six demerit points in the past twelve months and no DUI conviction within the past five years; binocular vision of 20/25 corrected; weight in proportion to height; no conviction of felonies and/or habitual misdemeanors; no conviction of, or guilty plea or no contest pleas to: misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including petit larceny; any misdemeanor sex offense; or any domestic assault; pass an extensive background investigation which includes a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening.

Utility Maintenance Worker (Martinsville, VA)

This is skilled labor and trades work performing a variety of construction, repair, and maintenance assignments that require the use of specialized tools and equipment. Open until filled.


This is skilled work in the operation of wastewater treatment and related equipment in a wastewater plant on an assigned shift. The trainee learns the operation of the wastewater plant and how to conduct standard tests. Work is performed with increasing independence, based on work experience in the plant operation and on individual performance. The amount of independence allowed and the procedures used emphasize the ability to perform work under limited supervision and to meet operating emergencies following precedents and practices based upon experience and training. A superior is usually available to provide assistance when needed, and work is reviewed through operating reports, inspections, conferences, and observation of results obtained.
