Heavy Equipment Operator
Location: Amherst County Public Works

Join the Amherst County Solid Waste Division as a Heavy Equipment Operator and help keep our landfill and transfer station running safely, efficiently, and responsibly. This is a hands-on, dynamic role that’s essential to the day-to-day operations of the county’s waste management program.

What You’ll Do:
As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you’ll be an essential part of the team responsible for:
  • Safely operating heavy equipment, including loaders, compactors, bulldozers, haul trucks, skid-steer loaders, track loaders, haul trucks, and dump trucks in compliance with regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Keeping the landfill and transfer station clean and organized
  • Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment
  • Directing incoming vehicles and assisting customers with unloading
  • Sorting recyclable materials from waste
  • Completing daily equipment inspections and maintaining regulatory paperwork
You’ll work under the supervision of the Public Works Director and serve as a professional, courteous representative of Amherst County.

Who We’re Looking For:
Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of experience operating heavy equipment (landfill or construction site experience preferred)
  • General knowledge of traffic laws, heavy equipment safety, and maintenance
  • Thorough knowledge of safe equipment operating practices and occupational hazards of the work
  • Ability to follow instructions, communicate clearly, and keep accurate records
  • Ability to detect mechanical issues, read gauges/manuals, and maintain logs
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License required

Working Conditions:
This is a physically active job requiring:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks involving bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and work-related hazards
  • Use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety protocols
