Amherst County is seeking qualified Part-Time Dispatchers to join our Emergency Communications team. This position plays a critical role in public safety by receiving emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatching appropriate emergency response units.
Position SummaryUnder general supervision, the dispatcher receives calls from the public, obtains accurate and detailed information, and transmits that information to emergency response personnel in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities-
Promote a professional, ethical, and courteous image as a representative of Amherst County

Receive and process 911 and non-emergency calls for service

Obtain precise information and dispatch appropriate emergency personnel

Enter and retrieve data using NCIC/VCIN, EMD, and teletype systems
-
Monitor field units and maintain awareness of unit locations and activities

Assist in coordinating emergency services during county-wide emergencies
-
Process and maintain records and paperwork from the Sheriff’s Department, Courts, and Magistrate’s Office, including warrants, protective orders, and investigative reports

Perform routine office and housekeeping duties

Remain available for call-back during emergencies

Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities-
Knowledge of public safety and emergency services operations

Ability to speak clearly and effectively

Ability to hear and understand multiple audio communication systems

Ability to remain calm and efficient in high-stress situations

Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively

Basic keyboarding and computer proficiency
-
Minimum of two (2) years of dispatching experience
-
Certification in accordance with Virginia DCJS Minimum Compulsory Standards for Dispatchers

Current certifications required:

VCIN Full Access
-
BLS CPR
-
Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)

Ability to sit for extended periods
-
Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing

Ability to speak clearly and hear communications accurately
-
Completion of FEMA IS-100/200/700 within 30 days of employment
-
Clean driving record
-
No criminal convictions
-
Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and polygraph examination
