Job Description: Yard Supervisor – Lumber Yard

FLSA Status: Full-Time / Exempt

Salary: $55,000 - $60,000 based on experience

Position Summary:
The Yard Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the lumber yard, ensuring the safe, efficient, and organized storage, handling, and distribution of lumber and building materials. This role involves supervising yard employees, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards, and maintaining inventory accuracy. The Yard Supervisor works closely with the Dispatcher & Operations Manager to ensure all yard activities run smoothly, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and industry regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Supervision & Team Leadership:
    • Supervise a team of yard workers, forklift operators, and other personnel to ensure smooth yard operations.
    • Assign tasks and responsibilities to staff, monitor performance, and provide guidance as needed.
    • Conduct regular training sessions on safety, equipment use, and proper handling of materials.
    • Foster a positive work environment, addressing any staff concerns and maintaining open lines of communication.
  2. Inventory Management:
    • Oversee the proper storage, labeling, and rotation of inventory to minimize damage and loss.
    • Ensure materials are organized according to product type, size, and order requirements for easy access and retrieval.
    • Track inventory levels, help with stocktaking, and ensure accurate reporting of inventory status.
    • Learn and Utilize Warehouse Management System (WMS) to ensure accurate inventory
    • Work with the purchasing manager to have materials reordered and maintain adequate stock levels.
  3. Safety & Compliance:
    • Enforce all safety protocols, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards, company policies, and industry regulations.
    • Conduct regular safety inspections, risk assessments, and hazard mitigation strategies to prevent accidents.
    • Investigate any accidents or safety incidents and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
    • Ensure that employees are wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to safe operating procedures.
  4. Material Handling & Quality Control:
    • Supervise the handling and movement of lumber and building materials within the yard, ensuring materials are undamaged and safely stored.
    • Oversee loading and unloading of trucks, ensuring that orders are accurate, complete, and securely packed.
    • Inspect materials for quality and ensure that only acceptable products are sent to customers.
    • Assist in managing the flow of goods, including moving materials to different areas of the yard or to delivery staging areas.
  5. Customer Service & Order Fulfillment:
    • Collaborate with sales teams and delivery drivers to ensure timely and accurate fulfillment of customer orders.
    • Assist in coordinating delivery schedules and ensure materials are prepared and ready for shipment.
    • Address customer concerns related to material quality, order accuracy, and delivery.
  6. Equipment Maintenance & Operation:
    • Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of all yard equipment, including forklifts, and other machinery.
    • Conduct regular equipment inspections, report malfunctions, and coordinate maintenance and repairs as needed.
    • Ensure that yard workers are properly trained in equipment use and safe handling.
  7. Administrative & Reporting Duties:
    • Maintain accurate records of inventory levels, orders, deliveries, and staff activities.
    • Assist in generating daily or weekly reports for the Operations Manager, summarizing operations, safety, and inventory status.
    • Help with the scheduling of yard personnel to ensure adequate staffing levels at all times.
  8. General Yard Operations:
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard environment, ensuring that all areas are free of hazards and debris.
    • Oversee the proper disposal of waste materials, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety standards.
    • Help identify opportunities for improving efficiency, reducing waste, and enhancing productivity within the yard.
 

Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (vocational or trade school education is a plus).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a lumber yard, warehouse, or construction materials handling environment.
    • At least 1-2 years of supervisory experience, managing teams and overseeing day-to-day operations.
    • Experience in operating yard equipment such as forklifts, cranes, or loaders is highly preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and guide a team.
    • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
    • Knowledge of inventory management, material handling, and quality control processes.
    • Strong knowledge of safety practices and OSHA regulations.
    • Ability to manage physical labor and work in outdoor or challenging conditions.
    • Basic computer skills for inventory tracking and reporting purposes.
 

Working Conditions:
  • Physical Requirements: The position requires frequent lifting of heavy materials, operating yard equipment, and working in physically demanding conditions.
  • Work Environment: Work is primarily outdoors or in a yard setting with regular exposure to dust, noise, and weather elements (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Hours: Full-time position; may require early morning, evening, or weekend hours based on yard operations and customer needs.

The Yard Supervisor plays a key role in ensuring that lumber yard operations run efficiently, safely, and smoothly. This is a hands-on position that requires strong leadership, a deep understanding of materials handling, and a commitment to safety and quality control. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in yard management, the ability to lead by example, and the flexibility to handle the day-to-day challenges that come with managing a busy yard operation.
