DEFINITION:
The Registered Dietitian serves as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) to ensure that qualified nutrition professionals are available to assess and certify nutritional risk, determine WIC eligibility, and prescribe/modify food packages in accordance with HHSC WIC policy. The Registered Dietitian is responsible for providing and coordinating nutrition and breastfeeding education, including individualized care for high-risk participants, and for documenting referrals and conducting timely follow-up. The RD ensures that WIC services are delivered in compliance with USDA and HHSC standards and that participant care promotes positive maternal and infant health outcomes.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives general supervision from the WIC Director, under the overall administrative direction of the Department of Health Services.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
WIC Specific Duties:
- Serve as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) to determine nutritional risk, certify WIC eligibility, and prescribe/tailor food packages in accordance with HHSC WIC policy.
- Provide individualized nutrition and breastfeeding education, counseling, and follow-up for participants, with special focus on high-risk conditions.
- Approve non-contract formulas and special nutritional products requiring Registered Dietitian authorization.
- Oversee the development and implementation of the Nutrition Education Annual Plan, including coordination of group classes and individual counseling sessions.
- Document assessments, care plans, referrals, and follow-up in the TXIN system in compliance with HHSC WIC requirements.
- Provide in-service training and technical support to WIC staff on nutrition, risk condition management, anthropometrics, breastfeeding, and dietary assessment.
- Support and train WIC peer counselors and nutrition staff to ensure consistent and accurate service delivery.
- Participate in quality assurance, monitoring, and compliance activities, and assist with implementing corrective action plans as required.
- Attend workshops, trainings, and continuing education activities to maintain professional credentials and ensure up-to-date practice.

- Moving loads of approximately 25-50lbs.

- Reading and writing
- Operating necessary and assigned equipment
- Communicating with others
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Current registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Current Texas state license (LD) as a Licensed Dietitian, in accordance with state law.
- Completion of State Agency-required training within designated timeframe after hire, as required by HHSC WIC.
- Knowledge of maternal, infant, and child nutrition, including breastfeeding promotion and support.
- Ability to assess and document nutritional risk and develop individualized care plans.
- Ability to prescribe and tailor WIC food packages according to HHSC WIC policy.
- Knowledge of federal and state WIC regulations, policies, and the Texas Administrative Code.
- Strong communication and counseling skills; ability to work effectively with economically and culturally diverse populations.
- Ability to provide training, in-service education, and technical support to WIC staff and peer counselors.
- Maintain current RD/RDN credential and LD license through continuing professional education as required by CDR and Texas state law.
- Maintain valid driver’s license (if city requires for off-site duties).
- Ability to travel to training or conferences as required.
