Syringe Disposal Associate (Per Diem) $26.94 per hour (10-20 hours per week) (940 Howard St.)

Position Overview:
We are largest syringe access and disposal program in the State of California and this position is integral to our efforts to remove used syringes from circulation, ensure their safe disposal, to prevent syringe sharing or syringe re-use, clean up syringe litter on our city streets, and to provide customer service focused rapid response to syringe clean up requests. Syringe Disposal Programming activates staff, volunteers, and community members to improve community safety through scheduled syringe cleanups and on-call response to San Francisco neighbor and merchant requests.
The Syringe Disposal Associate Per Diem works under the supervision of the Syringe Disposal Program Manager. This position focuses exclusively on syringe disposal activities.
This is a per diem position, meaning that there will not be a set schedule; rather, this position cover shifts on an as-needed basis, sometimes with little to no notice. Per Diem employees may be required to commit to and/or accept a minimum specified number of hours per month in order to maintain their employment status with the Foundation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Ability to maintain accurate and complete documentation of activities. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred valid CA Driver’s License, but not required. Punctuality and ability to adhere to scheduled shifts. Experience using Android and/or iPhone, including texting and basic apps. Ability to follow safety instructions and protocols. Ability to engage neighbors and merchants and Syringe Disposal Program teammates and managers with courtesy and respect. Basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, substance use, and Harm Reduction principles and practices. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Commitment to the mission and goals of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and Syringe Access and Disposal Services.

Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
This position requires standing for periods of up to five hours and walking distances of up to 7 miles during a shift. Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 20 pounds. This position requires the ability to use tongs to retrieve improperly discarded syringes, wearing a uniform and carrying safer disposal equipment, and safely use syringe disposal containers. Ability to perform bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The position requires work during evenings, weekends and holidays.
Education and Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent or combination of volunteer or work experience in customer service, janitorial, or food service.
Work Environment:
This position is located in outdoor community settings and services are provided rain, shine, heat or cold. Syringe Disposal Associate Per Diems walk or commute to disposal routes in the Syringe Disposal Vehicle or on public transportation. Safely containerized syringe waste is returned to 117 6th Street for disposal during shifts and Syringe Disposal Team and supervisory meetings are located at 1035 Market Street, Suite 400, however may require traveling to other office locations or off-site meetings as required by the job.

- Respond to requests for on-call syringe cleanup.
- Document Syringe Disposal Data.
- Share syringe disposal response team hotline number with merchants and neighbors and refer them to the Syringe Disposal Manager for more information, service requests, or concerns related to syringe litter.
- Interact with neighbors, merchants, community partners, with respect and courtesy.
- Report all incidents and engagements with neighbors/merchants to Syringe Disposal Managers.
