Seasonal Job: June - August (200 hours mostly on weekends and special events)

Supervised by Sydney Elliot (Kayak Tillamook) and Clair Thomas (Garibaldi Cultural Heritage Initiative)

Hourly wage: $15/hr

Minimum Age: 18

Overview: 

The mission of Garibaldi Cultural Heritage Initiative is to “explore, promote and enhance the rich cultural heritage and natural history of the Tillamook Bay region.

The mission of Kayak Tillamook is to “connect people with nature through safe, educational and accessible paddling in coastal bays, rivers and sloughs.

This pilot project between Garibaldi Cultural Heritage Initiative and Kayak Tillamook will enhance the branding of The Boathouse and will establish a site for kayak tours on Tillamook Bay.

The intern’s primary responsibility will be to lead kayak tours for visitors at The Boathouse.  In addition they will greet visitors to The Historic Boathouse, introduce activities at the boathouse give presentations on The Boathouse’s history and help set-up and clean-up for special events.

 

Duties of the Kayak Intern follow:  (intern will be trained on the job),

·         Maintain kayak fleet,  clean-up after trips, facilitate storage, repair kayaks as needed,

·         Boat Safety, Entry and exit of kayaks, paddling techniques and boat transport,

·         Kayak rescue, first aid and lifeguard certification.

 

Duties at The Boathouse when not leading a tour: (Intern will be trained on each topic)

·         Present the Natural History of Tillamook Bay as well as the local  fisheries’

·         Assist in collecting marine organisms and maintaining the two large aquariums,

·         Assist visitor’s involvement in citizen science involving crabbing, clamming and fishing,

·         Assist on special events and group field trips at The Boathouse,

·         Assist in developing new displays, education programs and web content.
