Position Summary  
The Peer Specialist will demonstrate dedication to promoting recovery opportunities, as well as utilize his/her own lived experience to inspire recovery in the lives of individuals utilizing Certified Peer Specialist approaches. The Peer Specialist also serves in relief role for fellow staff when necessary.


Provide trauma-responsive housing and mental health services to visitors (85%)
  • Conduct initial intake and orientation to the center, build trust and rapport with new visitors to encourage further engagement
  • Provide services, such as general treatment support and service coordination for necessary mental health, housing, and other applicable services through Tasks and/or other agencies in a timely manner
  • Establish and maintain necessary professional relationships with other community resources, agencies, and service providers as directed by supervisor
  • Complete required documentation, including but not limited to: intake forms/assessments, individual support plans, case notes, data collection
  • Assist with program preparation at the beginning and end of the day, and as needed during Center hours
  • Assist with design and facilitation of groups
Performs other related functions and duties (15%)
  • Participate in staff and program team meetings, as scheduled; participate in staff committees as time allows
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of current developments and issues in mental health, employment, and housing resources
  • Support Tasks Unlimited fundraising, promotional, and family events

Qualifications
Experience and Education
Required
  1. Experiential knowledge of homelessness with ability to share that experience and establish rapport and credibility with Opportunity Center visitors
  2. Familiarity working with diverse populations

Preferred
  1. High School diploma or GED is preferred

Knowledge
  • Psychology – Human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research messages; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
  • Customer and personal service – Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction

Skills
  • Active listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand points being made, asking appropriate questions, not interrupting inappropriately
  • Speaking – Talking to others to convey information effectively
