General Purpose:
McCarl’s Technical Services is seeking motivated engineering students—at least juniors in an accredited engineering program—who are eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-world EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) project work. As an Engineering Intern, you’ll support multidisciplinary teams working on heavy industrial projects. You’ll gain hands-on experience with design development, engineering calculations, field verification, and cross-discipline coordination.
Interns will be assigned responsibilities aligned with their current academic discipline (Civil/Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical/Process) and are not expected to perform engineering work outside their field of study.
This role is ideal for students who want exposure to the full project lifecycle and who enjoy solving practical engineering problems in a collaborative environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist engineers and designers with developing drawings, models, and technical documentation.
- Perform basic engineering calculations under supervision.
- Support design reviews at key milestones (30% IFR, 60% IFB, 90% IFA, 100% IFC).
- Participate in interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
- Review vendor data, equipment specifications, and submittals.
- Conduct field walks, collect site data, and support construction queries as needed.
- Help maintain project documentation, logs, and quality control records.
- Collaborate with project managers, designers, and other engineering disciplines.
- Follow company safety policies, engineering standards, and QA/QC procedures.
- Help with project management oversight including, review of scope, schedule, budget, and risk reviews.
- Effectively communicate and project the principles of the Talent Advantaged Roadmap.

Civil / Structural Engineering Intern
- Assist with site layout.
- Support structural analysis and design of foundations, steel structures, and concrete elements.
- Develop and revise civil/structural drawings including plans, sections, and details.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and assist with material specifications.
- Support field verification of civil/structural installations.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
- Assist with equipment sizing, heat load calculations, and HVAC system layouts.
- Support piping design including routing, isometrics, and pipe stress considerations.
- Review vendor equipment data sheets and integrate requirements into design packages.
- Help develop P&IDs, equipment lists, and mechanical specifications.
- Participate in 3D model reviews and clash detection sessions.
- Support field verification of mechanical systems and equipment installations.
Electrical Engineering Intern
- Assist with load calculations, panel schedules, and single-line diagrams.
- Support design of power distribution, lighting, grounding, and communication systems.
- Help develop electrical plans, conduit routing, and cable schedules.
- Review vendor data for electrical equipment such as MCCs, switchgear, and transformers.
- Participate in arc flash and short-circuit study data collection.
- Support field verification of electrical installations and equipment tagging.
Chemical / Process Engineering Intern
- Assist with process simulations, mass/energy balances, and equipment sizing.
- Support development of PFDs and P&IDs.
- Help prepare process datasheets for pumps, heat exchangers, vessels, and instrumentation.
- Review vendor process information and ensure alignment with design requirements.
- Participate in HAZOP/LOPA preparation activities and process safety reviews.
- Support troubleshooting and optimization efforts during field visits or commissioning support.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled as a junior or senior (this is negotiable based on candidate) in an accredited engineering program (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or related).
- Strong academic performance and foundational engineering coursework completed.
- Familiarity with engineering software and MSOffice suite.
- Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, and take initiative.
- Ability to work in office, field, or hybrid environments as required.
