STUDENT ROUTER/DISPATCHER
Position Summary:
The Student Router/Dispatcher plays an integral role in establishing and maintaining an efficient and productive transportation department. The Router/Dispatcher performs a variety of duties including but not limited to, routing, dispatching, scheduling and providing administrative support for the Student Transportation Department.
Reports To: Student Transportation Coordinator
Qualifications:
- Must be able to work well with others, as part of a team and maintain effective working relationships

- Must have excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be able to work independently and carry out assignments to completion with minimum instructions, adhere to prescribed routines and practice, maintain records, and make reports requiring accuracy and timely completion
- Must be able to meet deadlines on a weekly basis and on special projects as assigned
- Must have knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including computer proficiency
- Must have sympathetic attitude toward children and the disabled
- Must maintain open/direct communication with immediate supervisor
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions/dynamic environment and handle stressful situations with a diverse group in a tactful and courteous manner
- Apply pro-active problem-solving skills in situations with several variables
- Familiar with appropriate dispatching policies, practices and routing and dispatching software
Primary Job Functions:
Routing:
- Develops, maintains, and optimizes safe student vehicle routes
- Evaluates routes, so they make sense, are on-time, there are no conflicts, and modifies routes accordingly
- Insures the routes comply with student transportation requests i.e. on-time pick-up/drop-off, meet specialized needs etc.
- Insures the routes comply with company guidelines i.e. max ride time, crossing districts etc.
- Assists in the scheduling/assigning of driver personnel on all routes/trips
- Communicates problems and transportation routing concerns to the transportation supervisor(s)
- Presents scheduling and routing information at meetings as requested by the department director and/or transportation supervisor(s)
Dispatch:
- Communicates and monitors vehicles/passengers according to schedule
- Uses dispatch software to manage efficiency and timeliness of routes
- Ensures transportation requests are completed in an efficient and timely manner
- Processes same day route changes, requests, and modifies routes accordingly.
- Assists drivers with directions
- Reports routing conflicts, driver performance concerns, student concerns and routing improvements to the Supervisor
- Communicates with drivers via two-way radio and/or tablets and contacts drivers to receive or provide information and assists with situations such as equipment breakdowns, road hazards, accidents, student locations, route changes or emergencies; notifies schools of late buses or buses involved in emergency situations
Routing and Dispatching Software – Tablet:
- Assist with driver supervision and train drivers on tablet guidelines
- Assist that tablets are accounted for, functioning properly, and repaired accordingly
Other:
- Function as a driver as needed
- Function as an aide as needed
- Communicate with drivers, parents and district representatives
- Process payroll worksheets and respond to questions regarding accuracy
- Reconcile previous days trips and respond to questions regarding accuracy
- Assist with driver schedules and the variety functions that come along with this task
Secondary Functions:
- On-call duties
- Schedule may vary based on the needs of the department i.e. hours/days scheduled and Dispatch station
- Maintains a positive relationship with drivers, other dispatchers, and office staff
- Participates in the training and orientation of new and current drivers
- Attends staff meetings and in-service trainings
- Answers phones
- Schedules transports
- Completes data entry
- Completes a variety of reports as assigned
About the Position:
- Salary-$21 per hour
- Full-Time Hourly
- This is an in-person position
- Monday-Friday – Work schedule may vary, based on the needs of the department
