The Black Hills Surgical Hospital Summer Student Nurse Externship gives nursing students the opportunity to provide direct patient care under the supervision of an RN preceptor for a period of 10 weeks (240 paid clinical experience hours) beginning at the end of May to mid-August.  Admission criteria is as follows:
  • Be enrolled in an accredited registered nurse program and have completed all but their final year from graduation.
  • Be in good standing with the nursing school. Must provide at least 2 references from a recent, but current clinical faculty attesting to the candidate’s clinical skills.
  • Submit a completed reference from their current manager if a current BHSH employee.
  • Submit nursing school transcripts.
  •  
  • Possesses current AHA BLS certification.
  • Complete BHSH employee requirements, including background check and pre-employment drug screen.
Post Anesthesia Care: Phase 1 and 2 Students will enhance assessment skills with the post-operative patient awakening from anesthesia, gain pain control strategies and telemetry monitoring skills in the immediate recovery room.  They will enhance post-operative assessment skills and pain control strategies in the out-patient surgery discharge area. Students will learn the importance of post- operative/anesthesia discharge instructions for patient compliance and recognizing signs and symptoms of complications upon returning home.
