The Black Hills Surgical Hospital Summer Student Nurse Externship gives nursing students the opportunity to provide direct patient care under the supervision of an RN preceptor for a period of 10 weeks (240 paid clinical experience hours) beginning at the end of May to mid-August.  Admission criteria is as follows:
  • Be enrolled in an accredited registered nurse program and have completed all but their final year from graduation.
  • Be in good standing with the nursing school. Must provide at least 2 references from a recent, but current clinical faculty attesting to the candidate’s clinical skills.
  • Submit a completed reference from their current manager if a current BHSH employee.
  • Submit nursing school transcripts.
  • Possesses current AHA BLS certification.
  • Complete BHSH employee requirements, including background check and pre-employment drug screen.
Post-Operative Recovery Care Unit (Medical Surgical Nursing): Students will care for overnight observation or inpatients staying in the BHSH Recovery Care Unit.  Students will continue to utilize their head to toe assessment skills, prioritizing, organizing and planning care for both the post- surgical and medical needs of the patient, including assessing pain control. Assist with discharge instructions or transfer of patient to long term/rehab care. They will have 1/2 day to observe the role of Discharge Planning Nurse to gain insight as to how preparations are made for the patient once they are discharged home or transferred to a rehab facility for further care.
