Under general supervision, manages the vehicle maintenance operations of the transportation department as well as the Agency; oversees Agency fleet vehicle maintenance and repair; assures timely repairs and replacement of Agency vehicles; supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; assists in the selection of new buses and vehicles, performs vehicle maintenance approximately 70% of the time, and other duties as assigned.


Salary $83,000-$90,000 annually plus benefits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance rules and schedules.
  • Plan, schedule, direct the work, oversee periodic scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, review driver defect reports, develop work orders, review work orders, and prioritize and schedule work.
  • Develop preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles.
  • Assure compliance with CHP and Federal school bus regulations; oversee and assist with CHP Terminal and bus inspections.
  • Plan, schedule and oversee the servicing and cleaning of vehicles; establish and monitor effective wash schedules.
  • Oversee and manage the installation and ongoing maintenance, repair, and replacement of communication, video, and GPS equipment.
  • Assure that facility and bus maintenance, wash bay, hazardous waste storage, disposal, and fuel storage comply with all applicable State and Local regulations.
  • Develop relationships with vendors, research necessary parts suppliers, order the lowest cost, highest quality parts for vehicles.
  • Perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of school buses and all Agency rolling stock (approximately 70% of the job)
  • Adjust, repair, and maintain air and hydraulic brake systems, perform transmission and engine inspections, maintenance and repairs; perform major and minor tune-ups, rebuild or replace engines, transmission, or components as necessary.
  • Operate computerized diagnostic equipment and school transportation maintenance software with skill, precision, and knowledge.
  • Develop, evaluate and interpret vehicle maintenance data to ensure the safest possible vehicles for daily child and youth transportation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:
 
  • High School Diploma or G.E. D.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a vehicle maintenance technician, with at least three years in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance.
  • One year of experience as a lead or supervisor of a vehicle maintenance program.
  • Graduation from a junior college or technical college diesel or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance program is desirable.
  • ASE Master Technician level certification in the School Bus, Heavy Truck, or Medium Truck series is also desirable.
  • Possession of a valid Class A or B California Operator’s License with a valid medical certificate. (Job is contingent on attaining the commercial driver's license within six months of hire.)  This will require the incumbent to submit to DOT drug and alcohol testing.

  • Assure timely and professional repairs to all vehicles.

  • Order and maintain adequate parts stock assuring high quality and low cost.
  • Organize, prioritize and schedule work.  Meet schedules and timelines.  Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Perform a variety of mechanical maintenance and repair work on Agency vehicles.  Diagnose and repair all types of failures; operate a variety of tools, machines, and equipment used in the diagnosis and repair of vehicles. 
  • Read and interpret technical and mechanical diagrams, electrical and mechanical schematics, and repair manuals.
  • Ability to successfully operate a bus to drive to the site of a breakdown or test drive to determine issues and the completeness of repairs.
  • Operate a computer and mobile technology or diagnostic equipment.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge, and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
