The Sustainability Director reports to Goodwill’s Project Manager to fulfill the organization’s sustainability goals and initiatives. The Sustainability Director will oversee the overall execution, mission, and efficacy of our sustainability program and will collaborate with employees, customers, and other stakeholders to solidify the organization’s approach to sustainability with the goal of advancing Goodwill’s social, economic and environmental sustainability objectives.
  • Directs the organization in a strategic planning process leading to setting Goodwill’s direction in sustainability (social, economic and environmental), including goals, objectives and measurable outcomes
  • Brainstorms and identifies creative ways in which Goodwill can balance business obligations with the goal of respecting, supporting, and improving local and global communities and environments
  • Proposes and implements strategies to address environmental concerns including energy use, conservation, recycling, building and facility design, and general education on sustainability
  • Considers sustainability proposals with attention to factors such as cost effectiveness, feasibility, and ease of integration with other programs
  • Assesses and analyzes company policies and processes to identify areas in which improvements can be made in accordance with Goodwill’s commitment to sustainability
  • Measures Goodwill’s sustainability performance, tracking key performance indicators, and continually provide updated metrics
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to engage internal stakeholders in sustainability initiatives (social, economic and environment) aligned with Goodwill’s sustainability direction
  • Prepares documentation required for project proposals and grant applications
  • Creates and conducts in person presentations to different groups, including funders
  • Participates in leading meetings, creating agendas and producing meeting notes
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously
  • Represents Goodwill of the San Francisco Bay at Goodwill International’s (GII) Sustainability Committee
  • Participates in opportunities for continued training and development
  • Able to work with equipment typically found in an office, should be able to perform the essential functions of the job, and work remotely and/or in person generally between the hours of 9am – 5pm.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in sustainability planning, implementing sustainability initiatives and project management
  • Experience leading organizations in strategic planning for sustainability direction and initiatives
  • Thorough and current knowledge of sustainability practices, with equal emphasis on social, economic and environmental pillars
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, accuracy and ability to meet objectives and deadlines
  • Experience working with multiple departments with a strong customer service orientation
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and effectively manage multiple, competing assignments and responsibilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PPT, Excel) and shared programs and learning platforms
  • Ability to design, implement and oversee projects from inception to evaluation.
  • Works collaboratively with multiple stakeholders (cross-functional) and can motivate others to action
  • Prioritizes and work well under the pressure of deadlines
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills to present, run meetings and train others
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills, including in person, phone and electronic-based
  • Makes effective decisions when presented with multiple options for how to progress with a project
  • Takes direction, feedback and open to learning
  • Works respectfully and cooperatively with diverse group of individuals from a variety of educational, social and economic backgrounds
  • Respects and has knowledge of cultures, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientations and age groups other than one’s own, able to work effectively with all
