GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is actively growing its dams, levees and water resources practice in the New England and Mid-Atlantic areas.  We are currently seeking a Dams/Environmental Senior Project Manager for our Springfield, MA office.  The position offers great potential for professional growth in an exciting working environment and the opportunity to apply the latest technologies to our dams/levees and environmental-related projects.  The qualified candidate must have strong leadership and project management experience.  Demonstrated business development experience and the aptitude to generate project leads and build client relationships is preferred.  A strong background in dam and/or levee investigations and engineering is preferred.

Key Duties:
  • Conducting dam and/or levee safety inspections
  • Supervising fieldwork including test borings and instrumentation installations and construction monitoring for dam and levee rehabilitation projects
  • Providing data analysis, organization, and interpretation in support of dam/levee inspections, evaluations, and rehabilitations projects
  • Executing and/or supervising hydrologic and hydraulic engineering analyses for spillway capacity evaluations and dam break analyses and Emergency Action Plans including watershed analysis, climate change accounting, and familiarity and proficiency with USDA-NRCS hydrologic methodologies, StreamStats, NOAA Atlas 14, and USACE’s HEC-SSP, HEC-HMS, and HEC-RAS 
  • Executing and/or supervising geotechnical engineering analyses including seepage and slope stability analyses of embankment dams and levees, toe drain and filter designs, and gravity dam stability analyses
  • Writing inspection/engineering reports and assisting in preparing permit applications     
  • Preparing construction plans and technical specifications
  • Performing cost/quantity estimates and project scheduling
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with team members, clients and contractors
  • Providing leadership/mentoring to technical staff
  • Preparing technical and cost proposals
  • Working with a GZA Principals and interacting with clients and regulatory agencies
  • Executing project management duties including managing and tracking budgets, invoicing, and assessing staffing requirements and performance
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field of practice is required. M.S. in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical or Environmental focus) is strongly preferred.
  • Professional Engineer license in MA is required with the ability to obtain PE in CT, VT, and NY.
  • An ideal candidate will have at least 10 to 15 years of experience in civil – geotechnical engineering, with direct involvement in dam safety inspections, stormwater management, condition assessments, subsurface exploration programs, engineering analyses, dam rehabilitation design, and regulatory permitting.
  • Direct experience completing projects with public sector/municipal agencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York is highly preferred.
  • Proven experience with design and development of engineering technical specifications, cost estimating, and other related bidding documents is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to speak publicly
  • Solid project financial management skills; knowledge of production support systems and personal computer proficiency are all required competencies.
  • Experience in providing technical and project leadership to staff-level or junior engineers
  • A strong background using various geotechnical and/or hydrologic and hydraulic analysis computer software
  • Proven experience with and directing staff with AutoCAD and ArcView-GIS is considered essential for this position.
  • Experience with applicable state and federal agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is preferred.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel may be required. Candidate must have consistent means of transportation to/from project sites.

GZA’s Dam and Levee Safety Group is made up predominately of geotechnical and civil engineers in close association with hydrologic and hydraulic engineers from our Water Resources Group.  Typical project teams also include ecological professionals from our Natural Resource Group.  GZA’s Dam and Levee Safety Group routinely executes projects in the New England and Mid-Atlantic States and occasionally in other areas of the country.
