The Opportunity:
McElhanney has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Traffic Engineer to join our Traffic & Road Safety Division in Surrey, BC. In this role, you will be key in assisting with the preparation of traffic impact studies and management plans, analysis of data collection, signing and pavement marking design, and technical report writing. You will have the opportunity to work with stakeholders and clients at various levels to provide a range of services for roads, highways, trails, active transportation, and transit systems.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Assist on transportation projects from proposal stage through completion of draft and final reports
  • Application of transportation models including Synchro, Sidra, HCS, Vistro, VISSIM, VISUM as well as mapping using ArcGIS
  • Assist in preparing technical analysis and report writing with supporting business case
  • Assist in data collection, data processing/validation, and field investigations for transportation studies
  • Develop future traffic demand and analysis; communicate and present findings to clients/stakeholders
  • Assist in developing and evaluating functional or conceptual plans for transportation facilities (roadways, parking, transit, rail, ferry, airport, cycling and pedestrian) to address identified safety, mobility, and reliability issues
  • Network and Area Planning Studies, Traffic Impact Studies & Traffic Management Plans, Signing and Pavement Marking Design
  • Transportation studies, involving the need and justification for new transportation projects alternatives analysis, demand forecasting, transportation system/network planning and operations, transportation master plans, and sustainable transportation

What You’ll Bring:
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus in transportation planning/engineering preferably with some co-op experience in a similar role
  • Eligibility for registration as an E.I.T.
  • Understanding of the transportation planning/engineering concepts and practices, and ability to think out of the box balanced with a strong sense of practicality
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Some knowledge of relevant transportation planning and traffic engineering policies and procedures in Western Canada
  • Working knowledge of transportation engineering related software such as, Synchro, SimTraffic, Vistro, VISUM, VISSIM, EMME, AutoCAD etc. would be an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Effective people, client, and project management skills
