The Opportunity:
McElhanney Ltd. has a rewarding opportunity for an individual to join our Major Projects team as a GIS Mapping Specialist in Calgary AB. In this role, you will be responsible for using ArcPro and AutoCAD to generate mapping products and related plans by modeling, managing, analyzing, and displaying geospatial data for pipeline projects and linear infrastructure projects.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Compile required maps and related plans from digitally acquired data, aerial photographs, survey notes, records and other maps using digital mapping techniques, computer interactive graphics, computer-assisted design and mapping software.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of coordinate systems and transformations, survey methodologies, provincial base mapping, land use and resource inventory data in order to plan, design and format map content to clients’ specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Work with internal and external clients to develop maps and mapping projects. Provide technical and Geomatics expertise and develop new cartographic methods and techniques to meet specialized client needs.
  • Oversee mapping projects and supervise others as assigned. Estimate production times and costs. Edit, revise, update and correct existing maps. Maintain quality control and inspect final compositions to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Establish good rapport and build relationships with peers and clients by responding to requests and communicating information in a timely manner. Ensure a broad understanding of in-house departmental requirements and all internal reference materials.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain data standards, quality control procedures and guidelines for the conversion and loading of base data. Provide custodial role for base system data and perform base file updates from various sources of hard copy and digital data.
  • Follow established practices and techniques to produce, edit, and modify standard drawings with technical accuracy from preliminary data provided by the Project Manager or Sr. Draftsperson
  • Establish good rapport and build relationships with peers by responding to requests and communicating information in a timely manner
  • Comply with all company policies including safety policies and WCB regulations
  • Perform other related duties as required

What You’ll Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Geography, or related field, with a specialization in GIS. Technical Diploma with Geographical Information Systems/Geomantic specialization or a combination of 5 years’ experience and education that provides the relevant knowledge and abilities
  • Knowledge of Computer operating systems and equipment such as ArcPro, AutoCAD, Global Mapper and FME
  • Ability to work under pressures generated by deadlines and workload
  • Organized, good written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and sound judgment
  • Ability to work independently and within a busy and high-performing team
  • Ability to multi-task, excellent organizational skills, communication skills, and attention to detail
