The Opportunity:
McElhanney Ltd. has an exciting opportunity for a Bridge Engineer to join our growing team in Vancouver. In this role, you will be working within our Bridge Engineering Division focusing on delivering bridge work related to highways, rural roadways, resource roads, urban streets, and pedestrian bridges. The ideal candidate will have experience with assisting or leading (depending on years of experience) the pursuit and delivery of both design-build and design-bid-build projects, including the design, rehabilitation, seismic retrofit, and / or evaluation of bridge structures.

As a Bridge Engineer, you will have approximately 8+ years of professional experience, while being a strong team player with high productivity and excellent attention to detail. Aside from your technical skills, you’ll also have the opportunity to leverage your established contacts and local experience to further build out the business of bridges and structures.

What You’ll Be Doing: 

  • Prepare, review and provide oversight for structural design calculations of bridges, from larger structures to single-span structures and bridge-sized culverts, retaining walls and shallow foundation design, pedestrian bridge design
  • Prepare conceptual, design and contract cost estimates
  • Coordinate with various sub-consultants and project stakeholders
  • Assist in the preparation of approval, tender and contract documents
  • Assist or lead in the project management and technical delivery of large, multi-disciplinary projects
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff
  • Work with other team members to ensure schedules, budgets, and quality control standards are achieved and maintained
  • Participate in strategic planning for the growth of the bridge group
  • Lead individual assignments, including coordination of staff and external sub-consultants
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff

What You’ll Bring:
  • Degree in Civil Engineering and / or Structural Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution with 8+ years’ experience in the design of bridge structures
  • Proven technical abilities. Experience or acumen for project management an asset
  • Registration in good standing as a P.Eng. in BC, or any other Canadian province or territory
  • Experience with the design and analysis of structures in areas of high seismicity
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal as well as a positive, team-oriented attitude
  • Proven ability to coordinate and mentor young professionals
