NAVATEK, a privately-owned defense contractor, is seeking a Senior Engineer to work on a range of exciting Department of Defense research and design challenges. The candidate will have the opportunity to help lead ground-breaking research across a diverse range of applications, including: digital twins and autonomous systems. The candidate will also have the opportunity to help steer the electrical systems engineering and construction for a range of vehicles and autonomous systems for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Army. This position is an opportunity to join a group of talented engineers growing to fill the needs of the Department of Defense.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, and 10+ years of experience in the design and analysis of electrical and electro-mechanical systems and controls. Must be willing to work on a range of projects including: basic and applied research, ships, submarines, autonomous vehicles, and electrical grids. Candidate should be able to thrive in a research environment – identify technical gaps in the state-of-the-art and translate client needs into system or research requirements, manage a project from conceptualization through proof-of-concept, and clearly communicate results to stakeholders. An understanding of naval vessels or electrical power grids a plus. Software development experience a plus. Periodic travel between our offices in Honolulu, HI, Portland, ME, Providence, RI, and Arlington, VA will be necessary for project management.

  • Research and development: problem identification, requirements definition, new theory development, analysis, experimentation.
  • Engineering of mechanical systems and system of systems including hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, and structural.
  • Software and code development.
  • Presentation of systems in written technical data packages and design reviews with the customer.
  • Construction oversight of system specific installation, benchmarking, and dockside testing.
  • Test support of systems during builder’s trials.

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or related field
  • 10+ years of professional experience in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Direct experience applying machine learning and data analytics to problems in engineering system design. Experience working with “digital twins” or “virtual twins” is a plus.
  • Direct experience with hardware/software design and implementation for data collection.
  • Practical experience in modern software engineering methods and the respective tooling, proficiency with programming languages (C++, Java, Python, C#.NET), and in web technologies (HTTP, HTTP/2, WebSockets, HTML5, JS, WebGL).
  • Focus on delivering working results meeting the given functional requirements and quality attributes.

  • Computer aided design (CAD) and ability to read and create engineering drawings.
  • Coding: some ability in an object-oriented language (e.g. C++, python).
  • Instrumentation and sensor data collection.
  • Clear technical writing and communication.
  • Digital twins, or virtual twins, for engineering systems.
  • Machine learning, data analytics.
  • Augmented reality/virtual reality.
  • Strong understanding of the governing physics of an engineered system: e.g. electrodynamics, thermodynamics, structural mechanics, hydraulics.
  • Experience with marine systems.
