The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is seeking a Senior Publicist who will work with the Director of Media and Public Relations in planning, implementing, and reporting on promotional campaigns for exhibitions, public and education programs, and institutional initiatives of the Guggenheim. Interfacing with senior and curatorial staff, the Senior Publicist will contribute towards broader institutional goals of visibility of the Guggenheim’s exhibition programming, innovative scholarship, and public engagement.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
There are no direct reports associated with this position. However, the Senior Publicist is aided by the Publicist, interns, and, for pre-assigned projects, other internal and external colleagues.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Create and execute targeted, results-oriented publicity campaigns for exhibitions and related programming.
  • Support Director, Media and Public Relations with institutional strategic planning and campaign implementation.
  • Work closely with marketing and interactive teams to develop key messages and comprehensive communications plans.
  • Project manage media announcements for exhibitions and exhibition-related programming and events.
  • Coordinate interdepartmentally and with external funders and sponsors to ensure consistent and compelling multi-channel communications.
  • Maintain and build relationships with journalists, and introduce new journalists to the Guggenheim.
  • Pitch features and reviews to print, online, and broadcast media in international, local, and national outlets.
  • Conduct media outreach regarding Guggenheim institutional announcements on staff appointments, grants, key acquisitions, and digital advancements, as assigned.
  • Write and edit materials including releases, fact sheets, briefing documents, media alerts, and pitch letters.
  • Manage the selection and distribution of press images for assigned projects.
  • Oversee production of press materials for assigned projects, and coordinate translation, if needed.
  • With support from the Publicist, help plan and produce media events for exhibitions, including invitation design, compiling media guest lists, distributing press releases and invitations, liaising with Advancement to finalize donor recognition, drafting and or reviewing remarks, and creating the run of show and interview schedules.
  • Manage and prioritize incoming media requests; pursue, coordinate and facilitate interviews with curators, living artists, and appropriate spokespeople.
  • Coordinate early previewing of exhibitions for journalists.
  • Represent museum in collaborations with external publicists, agencies, and galleries regarding media outreach and messaging.
  • With Publicist’s support, organize exhibition-related shoots.
  • Identify and introduce new journalists and their audiences to museum programming.
  • Oversee the tracking of publicity results, circulating relevant coverage to museum colleagues, and support activity reports.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in an arts or cultural publicity/marketing department– visual arts environment preferred.
  • Proven record of relevant media placements with excellent local, national, and international contacts in the media.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • Excellent judgment dealing with highly confidential information.
  • Superb attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines on an ongoing basis.
  • Strong working knowledge of modern art and contemporary artists and art practices to inform communications with colleagues, art critics, and media.
  • Reading and speaking knowledge of foreign languages is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Photoshop is required. Basic knowledge of Adobe and HTML coding a plus.
  • B.A. preferably in Art History, Communications, English or the humanities
  • Ability to work at evening or weekend events is required.
