SUMMARY OF POSITION
The On-Call Carpenter will be working independently, under the supervision of the Head of Exhibition Construction. Although traditional carpentry skills are important and needed for this position, the nature of the carpentry performed in the museum demands the ability to adapt to novel situations. As an on-call employee, you will not have a set schedule. You will work on an as-needed project basis, with scheduling in advance.
SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Experience with hand and power tools, ex, drills, saws, hammer drill, table saw, and miter saw.
- Flexibility and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of shop cabinetry and museum wall construction is preferred.
- Knowledge of museum display methods
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent ability to work in a fast-paced environment and with limited project timelines.
- Good communication skills, communicating with fellow team members
- Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to be proactive, use independent judgment and initiative.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Layout and assemble partition walls using metal tracks and studs
- Hang drywall board, plywood, and other lumber materials
- Install custom cabinetry, display cases, and platforms
- De-install outgoing shows by demolishing museum walls, pedestals, and platforms
- Pack and unpack display casework
- Conduct yourself in a clean, organized manner
- Maintain woodshop and work area to ensure an organized and clean workspace
WORK DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENT:
- Occasionally, work may be conducted outdoors, with exposure to varied weather conditions.
- Ability to work with a team of people throughout the museum, including facilities staff, conservators, registrars, art handlers, curators and exhibition designers.
- Ability to work occasional nights, weekends, etc.
- Ability to lift at least 60 lbs. (equivalent to one 5-gallon bucket of joint compound)
- Ability to collaborate with diverse implementation teams is essential.
- Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of Guggenheim’s owned or leased properties upon request.
EDUCATIONAL/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or equivalent required

SALARY RANGE: $35.12 - $42.14 per hour
