SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the guidance of the Director of Learning, the Teaching Artist will work independently and as part of a team to deliver and support the Guggenheim’s hallmark in-school residency program, Learning Through Art (LTA). LTA sends teaching artists into New York City public elementary schools where they collaborate with classroom teachers to develop and teach artmaking workshops related to the school curriculum, culminating in a public exhibition at the Guggenheim. The Teaching Artist will plan and lead a 20-week residency that invites students to examine works of art, develop creative expression, and make connections to their own lives. The ideal candidate will be passionate about teaching art to elementary students and truly care about building relationships within diverse schools and learning communities.

SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Currently a working and exhibiting artist based in New York City; an active teaching practice is strongly preferred.
• Minimum two years of experience teaching art to elementary students or youth audiences, including developing curriculum, lesson plans, or multi-session artmaking projects in a school, museum, or community setting.
• Strong classroom management skills and ability to work with students of varying needs and abilities, especially multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
• Commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy and experimentation; a strong understanding of inquiry-based teaching and process-oriented arts instruction.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including a strong reflective practice and desire to learn from others.
• Ability to be proactive and adapt to a range of situations and shifting priorities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a high degree of professionalism and interpersonal awareness.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Preferred language skills in addition to English: Spanish, Russian, Mandarin.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Conduct an in-school residency one day each week for 16 weeks, teaching three single-grade classes each day for 90 minutes per class.
• Design a residency plan and a focal project that connects to school curriculum, an essential question, and works from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
• Align lessons and classroom instruction with the LTA teaching framework, which typically includes inquiry around a work of art, artmaking, and reflection.
• Coordinate with the LTA program team around residency planning and logistics, including but not limited to scheduling, troubleshooting, and adapting feedback.
• Complete administrative tasks related to the residency, including but not limited to submitting weekly lesson plans, ordering supplies, and completing timesheets.
• Prepare student artwork, writing, and documentation for the public exhibition, A Year with Children, and work with the school to mount an in-school exhibition.
• Attend quarterly professional development meetings and an end-of-year review with the LTA program team.

WORK DEMANDS and ENVIRONMENT:

• This position is part-time and temporary for the duration of the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
• Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of the Guggenheim’s owned or leased properties upon request.
• This position requires traveling to a school in New York City, including schools in Brooklyn, the Bronx (District 75), Queens, and Staten Island.
• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
• Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree required
• Master of Arts with background in Visual Art, Art History, Education, or related field preferred

POSITION TYPE: Part-Time, Non-Exempt for the 2026-2027 school year (September 2026–June 2027). Position will be covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement with Local 2110, UAW.

SALARY RANGE: $10,300 flat rate plus additional compensation for professional development.
