EHS Program Description:

Our Early Head Start offers comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income and underserved populations including expecting mothers, infants, toddlers and their families. In center-based as well as home-based settings we promote infant and toddler health & development, foster positive family relationships and supports parents as the primary decision makers and nurturers of their children.  Tools and learning strategies are employed to enable the children to enter school ready to succeed.

 

Infant/Toddler Teacher I

Brief Position Description:

Under the direct guidance of the Early Head Start Site Supervisor, the EHS Infant-Toddler Teacher I works as a partner with the EHS Infant-Toddler Teacher II. This position assists in developing activities for infants and toddlers to provide them with varied experiences and an appropriate learning environment. The Infant-Toddler Teacher I works with typically developing children, children with disabilities and with families to promote parental involvement in the program. This position provides assistance to the EHS Infant-Toddler Teacher II in fulfilling the goals, policies and activities designed to achieve educational objectives and to meet performance standards. The Infant-Toddler Teacher I may be assigned additional duties and to various classrooms/centers based upon program need and area of developing expertise.

Essential Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Infant/Toddler Classroom Activities
    • Facilitates the creation and implementation of a developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive program that supports the child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development
    • Cleans, sanitizes and helps to maintain a healthy, safe, clean environment inside and outside that ensures comfortable and challenging experiences that meet the changing needs of infants and toddlers
    • Assists in maintaining teacher/child ratios by covering for staff during  break times
    • Oversees and performs meal time tasks (i.e., preparation; service; clean-up)
    • Maintains an environment that reflects the home culture of the families being served with the goal of increased understanding of their own culture and the culture of others
    • Displays positive guidance and discipline techniques that foster an atmosphere of acceptance that supports positive self esteem
    • Understands 0-3 child development and applies this knowledge during interactions with infants and toddlers
    • Assists in kitchen including meal preparation and clean up
    • Assists classroom/center in any aspect of the program as the need arises and/or as requested by the site supervisor
  • Non-Classroom Activities
    • Maintains a professional attitude and cooperates with colleagues and administration
    • Utilizes and supports the established system to meet requirements for and track parent involvement in the classroom
    • Builds positive and productive relationships with families that focus on trust and support and encourage involvement in the EHS program
    • Encourages parents in developmental activities that support their role as their child’s first teacher, including volunteering in the classroom.
    • Involves parents in educational activities that support their role as their child’s first teacher, including volunteering in the classroom
    • Understands and adheres to the HS Performance Standards, Standards of Conduct, Licensing and State regulations as well as SCF’s Policies and Procedures
    • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with co-workers and other collaborators
    • Attends and participates in on-going infant/toddler training and professional growth activities as deemed necessary by the SCF EHS Management team
    • Attends all required staff meetings and parent meetings
    • Learns and applies the regulations associated with prevention of occupational diseases and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.
    • In a professional manner, promotes the SCF-EHS mission, standards and philosophy with families, program partners and in the community
  • Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

    • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds including infant and/or toddlers weighing 6 to 50 pounds continuously throughout the day, including diapering, feeding, changing and comforting
    • Must be able to able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, reach, stoop, and crouch to interact successfully with infants and/or toddlers throughout assigned work shift
    • Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate specialized apparatus and standard office and classroom equipment
    • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
    • Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities
    • Driving a vehicle to conduct work (conducting home visits 1-4 times per program year)
    • Tolerate some exposure to communicable diseases
    • Tolerate moderate to loud noise level
    • Some travel by car, bus, airplane or train may be required as associated with attendance at conferences, meeting and other duties carried out at distant locations in and out of state and in some cases overnight travel may be required

Job Requirements:

  • Requirements:
    • Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
    • Must have a minimum of a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential with a focus infants & toddlers
    • Must have ability to speak read and write English well enough to understand and be understood
    • Must communicate understandable ideas and instructions orally and in written format using English
    • Must have the ability to maintain written documents and records
    • Ability to read, analyze, understand, and interpret policies and educational materials in required
    • Must be able to communicate and understand infants/toddlers, their parents and other staff
    • Must have the ability to gather and interpret moderately complex information
    • Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide
    • Ability to exhibit patience and tact when communicating with children, families, staff, and supervisor is a requirement
    • Ability to project professionalism in appearance, interactions and conduct throughout daily activities is a must
    • Must acquire CPR/First Aid Training for Infant/Child/Adult within ninety (90) days of hire date and maintain through duration of employment
    • Must obtain a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Work Card (Sheriff’s Card) for Child Care prior to hire date and maintain through duration of employment
    • Must submit negative TB results (One-Step Skin Test or Chest X-Ray ) prior to hire date and submit every two years of employment
    • Must have a physical performed and document submitted prior to hire date and submit every five years of employment
    • Must acquire Food Handler Safety Training Card (formerly Health Card) prior to hire date and maintain through duration of employment
  • Preferred
    • Experience with infants/toddlers in a center-based setting is preferred
    • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
