EHS Program Description:
Our Early Head Start offers comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income and under-served populations including expecting mothers, infants, toddlers and their families. In center-based as well as home-based settings we promote infant and toddler health & development, foster positive family relationships and supports parents as the primary decision makers and nurturers of their children. Tools and learning strategies are employed to enable the children to enter school ready to succeed.
School Readiness / Staff Development Specialist
The School Readiness/Staff Development Specialist will provide staff coaching, new employee training and overall support to child development staff. This position will use proven, effective strategies to increase staff’s ability to support positive school readiness outcomes for children ages zero to three, in both center and home-based program options. The School Readiness/Staff Development Specialist is responsible for providing technical assistance with assessment tools, computer-based applications, and cooperative learning techniques as necessary. The position will ensure that teaching staff receive the direction required to successfully implement the assigned curriculum, individualized planning and best child development practices which promote high quality learning and school readiness skills.
The School Readiness/Staff Development Specialist works closely with the Early Childhood Education Manager; collaborates with Center Directors, teachers and other staff in the Sunrise Children's Foundation-Early Head Start (SCF-EHS) program to ensure that outcomes are achieved for children of all abilities.
Essential Competencies/Responsibilities (but not limited to):
The School Readiness/Staff Development Specialist will ultimately be evaluated on a combination of skills, dispositions and behaviors, some of which are related to the specific service area of this position and others that represent the general expectations of all SCF-EHS employees.
The School Readiness/Staff Development Specialist responsibilities chiefly fall within the following essential functions, although s/he may perform other tasks and/or duties as assigned. The School Readiness/Staff Development Specialist will demonstrate competency to perform essential functions that include:
- Develop and maintain positive, supportive relationships with child development staff.
- Work with the Center Directors to develop a schedule for conducting classroom observations as a foundation for determining needs.
- Develop individual coaching plans, with specific goals and areas for growth identified, which are based on classroom and teacher observations.
- Review coaching plans with the ECE Manager, and assess teacher progress.
- Follow-up on individual teaching staff needs for coaching services and document nature of training provided.
- Provide constructive feedback and support to teaching staff for learning and growth. This may include modeling, activities, reading material, or other resources as needed to guide learning and practice.
- Train new teaching staff, ensure and monitor progress toward credentialing and maintain support as needed while teachers gain knowledge of the role and the responsibilities of their position.
- Plan and present small and large group workshops on relevant child development topics based on program monitoring outcomes.
- Promote best practices in early childhood development based on Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF), the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Creative Curriculum, Parents as Teachers, state childcare guidelines, and other prescribed curricula used at SCF-EHS.
- Use reflective practice and additional strategies to promote positive outcomes for the teaching staff and the children they influence.
- Establish and implement Practice Based Coaching strategies using “Teachers Learning and Collaborating (TLC)” learning communities structure and with EHS teaching staff and home visitors.
- Conduct pre-assessments to identify staff strengths and challenges with relevant research-based instruments such as the Home Visit Rating Scale (HOVRS).
- Coach assigned teachers and home visitors by utilizing research-based effective teaching strategies based on the individualized needs of each staff member.
- Improve staff's ability to foster school readiness and/brain development in children zero to three years, as documented by improved school readiness outcomes.
- Prepare content and lead presentations at Teachers Learning and Collaborating (TLC) meetings.
- Observe and video staff in classroom and home visitation settings, implementing identified teaching strategies to enhance staff's teaching skills and techniques.
- Establish and maintain consistent and regular coaching schedules for staff.
- Propose innovative teaching approaches and goals to assist staff in the implementation of Professional Development Plans.
- Conduct post-assessments to measure improvements in staff strengths and challenges with relevant research based instruments, such as, the Home Visitation Rating Scale (HOVERS).
- Analyze and interpret various forms of data.
- Develop and modify coaching curriculum as necessary.
- Willing to acquire and maintain trainer of trainers' certification in Teachers Learning and Collaborating (TLC) techniques.
- Willing to acquire and maintain trainer of trainers' certification for Center for Social Emotional Foundations of Early Learning (CSEFEL) Pyramid.
- Work effectively with multi-cultural/diverse groups, can establish a positive relationship with staff, families and children.
- Knowledge of different teaching methods and styles, and can provide specialized and individualized instruction.
- Advanced skills in effective communication, both verbal and written in English
- Knowledge of principles of coaching/mentoring; experience preferred.
- Must have valid driver’s license and 3+ years of a clean DMV record
- Must be approved by SCF insurer to be added to corporate auto insurance policy
- Must understand and use the basic functions of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, & Excel), internet applications and other software to effectively access resources and complete required tasks.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule to fulfill job functions and program responsibilities
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development or a related degree and coursework equivalent to major in Early Childhood Education or Child Development. (Master’s degree preferred)
- Must have ability to use technology in an instructional environment and be able to successfully implement technology in presentations.
- Minimum Two (2) years or more working experience in a child development program (0 to 3 preferred), working directly with children, families and staff.
- One (1) year of management experience required
- Coaching, mentoring and/or trainer experience a plus
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & MISCELLANEOUS:
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds
- Must be able to work for long periods of time while maintaining concentrated attention to detail.
- Must be able to sit a table or desk for long periods of time with occasional standing, walking, squatting or reaching.
- Must be able to physically move through office, classroom, playground and other program environments
- Must be able to travel by car, bus, airplane or train for training or program activities as needed for local, in-state and out-of-state travel
- Must submit Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff's Card (for Child Care) prior to hire date and maintain during employment
- Must submit negative TB results (One Step TB or Chest X-ray) prior to hire date and every 2 years employed
- Must submit physical exam prior to hire date and every 5 years employed
