The Oklahoma Bankers Association is seeking an experienced leader who will advocate for the commercial banking industry and guide the operations of the organization as its next President and Chief Executive Officer. Ideal candidate will possess leadership skills essential for directing all areas of the organization with demonstrated success in business management, coalition-building and advocacy.

The Oklahoma Bankers Association is a strong and active statewide organization working to address the changing needs and challenges of the banking industry in Oklahoma. The CEO leads the organization as it assists its members through government relations, educational programs, legal and compliance services, communications, and insurance products. To help banks cope with their common concerns and needs, the CEO will work with the Board of Directors and staff to conceptualize, communicate and implement the goals and objectives of the organization.

This individual will oversee all aspects of the organization while also functioning as the strategic leader, chief lobbyist and “public face” of the Oklahoma Bankers Association.

Position Details
The President and CEO reports to the 25-member Board of Directors and serves as a non-voting Ex Officio member of the OBA Board. The CEO also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the OBA Insurance Agency and the OBA Services Company, supervises a staff of approximately 18 and manages an annual budget of approximately $3 million. This position is located in Oklahoma City.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership
  • Supervises and is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the business of the Association, the OBA Insurance Agency and the OBA Services Company. 
  • Maintains an awareness of current issues and problems confronting the banking industry and communicates those issues effectively with OBA member banks.
  • Serves as the chief staff liaison with the OBA’s Senior Management Committee, Agricultural Committee and the Oklahoma Association of State Banks.
  • Coordinates the efforts of the OBA to meet the goals and directives of the Board of Directors.
  • Supervises and leads the OBA staff as the executive responsible for all employment, duty assignments, training and evaluations.

Public Policy Leadership
  • With the Board of Directors, develops all legislative and regulatory objectives for the Association’s member banks, and leads the strategy for influencing legislative and regulatory action.
  • Works with the EVP – Government Relations to coordinate the Government Relations Council and OkBPAC activities.
  • As the chief lobbyist for the organization, directs and participates in lobbying activities within the state legislature.
  • Establishes relationships with legislators and regulatory agencies in Oklahoma and Washington, D.C.
Member Relations
  • Oversees activities related to maintaining effective member relationships across Oklahoma.
  • Develops ways to help banks be more profitable and better serve their customers and their communities.
  • Communicates with members through in-person visits, print and digital communications.

  • Serves as the primary spokesperson for the Oklahoma Bankers Association in the media, through public appearances, and by serving on various boards, committees, and councils to communicate the mission, needs and objectives of the organization.
  • Works closely with elected volunteer leaders on public communications strategy and creates opportunities for these volunteers to work with the media.
  • Regularly speaks publicly on various banking and Association issues.

  • Establishes relationships with other organizations pertinent to the interest and needs of the OBA.
  • Serves as liaison with BancInsure to assist the company in providing insurance products and services to member banks.
  • Maintains active involvement with State Association Division of American Bankers Association.
  • Coordinates legislative and regulatory strategies with ABA to accomplish objectives at the national level.

Travel Requirements
This position requires significant regular travel across the state to meet with membership, legislators and business leaders. The President & CEO also travels to Washington, D.C. regularly to meet with legislators, regulators and national partners.

Candidate Profile
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Professional Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years progressive business leadership experience.
  • Candidates should have a strong connection to the Midwest business community.
  • The ideal candidate will have a positive statewide reputation and the ability to interface and collaborate with members in both urban and rural areas of Oklahoma.
  • Candidates should have strong relationships with current business leaders in the region.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with lobbying, advocacy or coalition-building.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills
  • Understanding of and experience with the banking industry, organizational management, and business trade association culture and operations.
  • Political awareness and understanding of the legislative process in order to accomplish the organization’s goals at the Capitol.
  • Exceptional comprehension of how public policy changes may affect the Oklahoma banking industry.
  • Deep understanding of the Oklahoma banking industry.
  • Focused building relationships with various audiences and working with bankers, legislators, regulators and other trade associations to develop consensus on central issues while maintaining a sensitivity to different points of view held by member banks.
  • Strength in conflict management and consensus building.
  • Excellent relational competencies, including oral and written communication skills.

The Oklahoma Bankers Association today serves 226 member banks. Based in Oklahoma City, the OBA assists its members with government relations, educational programs, legal and compliance services, communications, insurance products and numerous products and services.

The Association was created in June 1897 when 25 banks from Oklahoma Territory assembled to organize in pursuit of their common goals. It was 10 years before Oklahoma became a state. About the CEO
The Oklahoma Bankers Association’s current CEO Roger Beverage is departing the organization after serving in his role for more than 32 years. Beverage will continue to lead the organization through the spring of 2021 to ensure a smooth and successful transition for his successor.
