Organization Profile:
Founded in 1999, BUILD uses entrepreneurship-based, experiential learning to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school.  Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses.  As they journey through high school, BUILD provides students with support in navigating the college application process and the opportunity to explore college and career options, while expanding their businesses or opting into community internships.   
 
BUILD currently serves high school students at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area; Washington, DC; Boston, MA; and New York City.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Program Director, the Student Experience Program Manager (SEPM) is responsible for ensuring that the BUILD program is an engaging and impactful experience for students.  The SEPM will implement systems to ensure students can run successful businesses while satisfying BUILD’s operational policies and procedures.  The SEPM will support planning and execution of school- and community-based events, that are a critical component of the BUILD curriculum.  Additionally, the SEPM will work closely with the Partnerships Manager to leverage mentors and other volunteers as an effective part of the BUILD program.   The SEPM will serve a portfolio of schools and form relationships with students, volunteers, and families to ensure excellence in program and outcomes.

Position Responsibilities:
Program Management
  • Plan and implement recruiting and retention strategies in collaboration with facilitators and school guidance counselors to maintain student enrollment
  • Collect and analyze data to evaluate current program success and make future improvements
  • Provide guidance, develop structures and execute systems to ensure students can run successful businesses

 Facilitator and Student Support
  • Develop and maintain relationships with facilitators, students, families, volunteers and staff at partner schools by demonstrating care, respect, and high expectations
  • Meet with school-based facilitators on a regular basis (weekly or bi-weekly) to review curriculum and student development, as well as engage in problem-solving around student needs
  • Support facilitators with quarterly Mentor Roundtables

Event Support
  • Support and attend key program events including competitions, family gatherings, sales bazaars and field trips
  • Support Development Team to execute school partner side of events, including: purchasing supplies; supporting invitations and communications for students and school staff
  • Support solicitation of feedback from facilitators and students about events and use data for continuous improvement

Candidate Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience planning and managing events and working with under-resourced youth or in underperforming schools
  • Experience in business operations or banking a plus
  • Entrepreneurial, business or start-up experience a plus
  • Knowledge of the local community a plus
  • Spanish fluency a plus

  • Managing and Motivating (Student, Staff and Volunteers) Performance—utilizes strategies appropriate for each individual to ensure high performance of self and others through the setting of clear goals and expectations, regular coaching, tracking of progress, provision of feedback and prompt remediation of issues
  • Attention to Detail—thoroughly manages all components of a task, however big or small, synthesizing available information to produce excellent results, and using a variety of organizational methods to lead to positive outcomes
  • Flexibility—demonstrates ability to steadily reprioritize, change approach, integrate feedback and pitch in wherever needed in order to get results
  • Results Orientation—the ability to achieve actions necessary to achieve task completion and to obtain results; the ability to meet schedules, deadlines, quotas and performance goals

Position Details:
  • Full Time/Exempt
  • Location: Oakland
  • Typical site operation hours are Monday – Thursday, approximately 9:30am – 6:30pm; Friday’s office time is flexible and can be earlier.  Additional morning, evening and weekend hours are also required to fulfill the duties of this position.
  • Frequent travel between local sites is required.  Work-related travel beyond the normal commute will be reimbursed.
