Organization Profile:
Founded in 1999, BUILD uses entrepreneurship-based, experiential learning to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school.  Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses.  As they journey through high school, BUILD provides students with support in navigating the college application process and the opportunity to explore college and career options, while expanding their businesses or opting into community internships.   
 
BUILD currently serves high school students at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area; Washington, DC; Boston, MA; and New York City.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Program Manager, the College and Career Access Coach (CCAC) is responsible for implementing and developing programming to ensure BUILD students acquire essential 21st century skills in order to prepare for college readiness and success. Primary duties of the CCAC include, but are not limited to, curating college readiness curriculum, working along with a program associate and a team of mentors, organizing college tours, and guiding students through the college application and financial aid process.

Position Responsibilities:

Management & Coaching
  • Facilitate workshops, conduct one on one coaching sessions and provide solution-oriented feedback
  • Check in regularly with program manager, educators and mentors to coach outcomes, strengthen curriculum implementation, differentiate approach and  problem-solve student issues
  • Manage and coach Program associate to outcomes

Program implementation
  • Plan and implement recruiting and retention strategies to maintain student enrollment
  • Plan and Execute  key program events including monthly workshops, one on one coaching/check-ins and field trips
  • Provide guidance, develop structures and execute systems to ensure students have the knowledge needed to successfully access higher education
  • Collect and analyze data to evaluate current program success and make future improvements
  • Manage entrepreneurship 4 program budget
  • Contribute to curriculum and program development by attending check ins with Program Manager and Program Director

Relationship-building
  • Utilize a customer service approach to cultivate and maintain relationships with schools, volunteers and other external partners
  • Develop and maintain student relationships at 2 partner schools by demonstrating caring, respect, and high expectations
  • Communicate effectively with staff, teachers,  students, families, mentors and other key stakeholders to foster individual student success and strong partnerships
  • Maintain relationships with individual mentors and volunteers
  • Collaborate with College Access Coaches across sites to share best practices, maintain consistency of outcomes and suggest program improvements
  • Support colleagues, students, and programming across site program areas

Candidate Requirements:
 
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum 3 years in college access work (preferably with under-resourced youth or in underperforming schools)
  • Knowledge of the Oakland community a plus
  • Spanish fluency a plus

Successful candidates will demonstrate the following competencies through a combination of previous education/work experiences
  • Coaching—provides direct guidance, support, and feedback through observations, modeling, scaffolding, check-ins and any other strategies necessary to ensure effective program implementation by educators, mentors and staff
  • Group/Team Facilitation—utilizes a variety of planning tools and facilitation strategies to effectively deliver information to a group so that they learn and achieve goals
  • Managing and Motivating (Student, Staff, and Volunteers) Performance —sets clear goals and expectations, tracks progress, provides feedback and addresses issues promptly in order to ensure high performance of self and others
  • Project Management—identifies and thinks through all necessary steps of a project, sets appropriate deadlines, moves seamlessly between prioritized tasks, identifies required participants and holds self and others accountable to outcomes and deadlines
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis—reviews quantitative and/or qualitative data sets in order to recognize patterns, identifies additional information or data needed, and draws conclusions
  • Strategic Thinking—takes into account and analyzes various points of view and data to form a perspective appropriate to a particular context; includes identifying or anticipating problems and implementing solutions

Position Details:
  • Full-Time/Exempt
  • Location: Oakland CA
  • Typical program operation hours are Monday – Thursday, approximately 9:00am – 5:00pm Friday’s office time is flexible and can be earlier. Additional morning, evening and weekend hours are also required to fulfill the duties of this position.
  • Frequent travel between local sites is required, so employees must have their own vehicle for transportation (valid license and proof of insurance required). Work-related travel beyond the normal commute will be reimbursed.
  • Occasional extended, overnight travel with students is required during the year for college visits and other activities.
