Position Summary

The Maintenance Department Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, definition and execution of the maintenance and reliability programs at the Columbia SC facility.  The Maintenance Department directly or indirectly manages the upkeep and repairs of production equipment, buildings, and utilities associated with 4 manufacturing departments, warehouse facilities and support functions.   The plant operates 24 hours/ 7 days a week.  This position has 16 direct reports:  12 mechanics, 2 electricians and 2 support personnel. 

The Maintenance Department Manager defines maintenance practices and procedures, optimizes utilization of maintenance labor and partners with the Production Department Managers to maximize equipment availability and performance. 

The successful candidate must have a passion for safety, the ability to foster strong working relationships built upon trust and respect with direct reports, peers, and leaders, demonstrate the ability to motivate and train associates, and be viewed as a clear and credible communicator and resource.

Essential Functions
  • Perform personnel functions to maintain adequate staffing, enhance productivity of personnel and achieve business and performance objectives.  This includes interviewing, hiring, promoting, scheduling, employee reviews, corrective action, training/development, etc. 
  • Set expectations, communicate priorities and direct maintenance activities to reduce unplanned equipment downtime, minimize total plant costs, and support production goals and customer expectations.  Investigate adverse events to determine root cause and corrective action.
  • Collect, organize, analyze and communicate information on unplanned equipment downtime, maintenance activities, staffing level and spending activity to evaluate performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and solicit management feedback and support
  • Collaborate with Production and Maintenance Personnel to develop and implement safe and effective practices and procedures to install, repair, start-up/shutdown, operate and service equipment.
  • Develop long and short range maintenance plans/programs (emergency response plans, energy management plans, spare parts inventory, annual budget, etc.)
  • Direct projects (equipment repairs and upgrades, preventive maintenance, annual shutdown, etc.) to ensure completion within established time frames, scope and budget.
  • Inspect new construction, repair work, projects, equipment, work orders, daily maintenance and supplies to confirm work is complete and meets expectations.   
  • Participate in meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions

Secondary Functions
  • Promote a respectful and professional work culture committed to safety, quality, and personal accountability
  • Grow functionality of the CMMS System (Maintenance Connection).  Document asset hierarchy, PM tasks and frequency, track work order status, define and monitor KPI dashboards, etc. 
  • Grow preventive and predictive maintenance programs
  • Collaborate with others on Management of Change activities to identify, evaluate, mitigate risk, and implement new products, parts, equipment and procedures
  • Employ TPM Maintenance methodologies
  • Research new products, methods, information and technology for the purpose of recommending purchases, contracts and maintaining equipment and services
  • Other assignments as requested

Required competencies and skills
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude, analytical thinking and innovative problem solving skills
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills for mechanical design, failure analysis, and maintenance best practices
  • General understanding of Engineering Standards and Specifications
  • Experience and knowledge of the design, selection, and application of process equipment such as pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, chillers, and air compressors
  • Exceptional supervisory skills including safety awareness, budget control, scheduling, setting goals and priorities, performance evaluations, etc.  
  • Proven team building skills
  • Strong computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office software.  Ability to manipulate spreadsheets and create presentations.
  • Has the ability to manage multiple projects with varied priorities and drive them to closure

Required education and experience
  • Bachelor degree in engineering or operations management preferred; or matching job experience 
  • 10 or more years of management experience in operations, maintenance, engineering and/or process improvement roles including managing teams of people
  • Experience with implementing preventive/predictive maintenance and TPM programs
  • Knowledge of maintenance work practices like planning and scheduling, rigging, pipe fitting, welding, alignments, lubrication, and work order handling
  • Capital project experience including: generation of scope and estimate; design of items like plant layout and piping; equipment design and procurement; and construction
  • Experience using CMMS work order systems
  • Understanding of safe work practices; excellent safety history
  • Basic first aid training or willingness to successfully complete such training
  • Forklift certification required
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt Certification a plus
  • CPMM Certification a plus
  • Microsoft Office Proficiency
