JOB TITLE:  WATER/WASTEWATER PLANT MECHANIC I
DEPARTMENT:  WATER RESOURCES

REPORTS TO: WATER/WASTEWATER PLANT MANAGERS
CLASSIFICATION:  GRADE 8 ($32,026 minimum annual salary)

FLSA STATUS:  NON-EXEMPT


NATURE OF WORK
                This is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of water purification and pollution control plant machinery and equipment.  Work involves responsibility for assisting a plant mechanic in the performance of a variety of repair and maintenance tasks in maintaining the efficient operation of water purification plant and water pollution control plant and related water storage and pump station facilities.  Work is primarily of a mechanical nature.  Work assignments may arise as a result of breakdowns in the plants, from inspections of operating conditions of the plants, preventive maintenance tasks or specific instructions from the mechanic or plant maintenance supervisor.  Work is inspected in process and upon completion for quality of work and operating results. 
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK
                Assists in performing general overhaul and repair work on plant equipment including pumps, chemical, feeders, mixers, electric motors, gearboxes, and all types of valves, plus portable equipment such as pumps, air compressors, welders, and yard tractors.     
Makes daily inspection of plants and pumping stations to determine if equipment is functioning efficiently; lubricates and performs other routine preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment.
Maintains files on maintenance service and spare parts, and an inventory of equipment.     
Assumes responsibilities of the plant mechanic when so directed by the maintenance supervisor.     
Assists, as needed, with the operation of solids handling equipment.  May be assigned as relief operator for sludge hauling truck.   
Performs building and grounds maintenance, and related work as required.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF WORK
High school graduation or the equivalent, and considerable experience in the skilled maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:     
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the mechanical trades.   Considerable knowledge of the principles of operation of pumps and related equipment.     
Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation.                                                                                                                                                                                                  Ability to recognize job safety hazards and include job safety in the work.
 Ability to maintain a preventive maintenance program including preparation of proper records and files.   
Ability to complete a project when so directed.
Ability to work and operate tools in awkward positions and restricted spaces.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to walk; talk or hear; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. Must have physical ability to traverse a six-acre plant site and negotiate stairs throughout the site. 
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
                Must possess a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License or obtain one within six months of employment.
