An Assistant Special Investigator is a sworn police officer, pursuant to section 1.20(34)(g) of the New York Criminal Procedure Law, who works in the direct service of the District Attorney's investigative initiatives.  Candidates for this position are customarily specialists in a particularized field of investigation or law enforcement tactics; adding to the overall skillset of the SCDA Investigative Operations Corps. 

Due of the confidential nature of the position, which includes conducting particularly sensitive investigations (including internal investigations where required) as a primary or assisting role, this position is in the exempt class.  The office-holder is an at-will employee that serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.  The work differs from that of the Detective Investigator class in that the incumbent works directly for the District Attorney on highly sensitive assignments.

The office-holder will execute operational directives of the Chief Detective Investigator and District Attorney, with anticipated duties including, but not limited to:
- Developing confidential informants and assets
- Executing search warrants (including preparation of TAC plans)
- Effectuating arrests (including high-risk arrests, as needed)
- Testifying in court and Grand Jury proceedings
- Analyzing enterprise records and data
- Extradition of fugitives
- Collecting and examining digital/social media/cybercrime footprints
- Preparing evidence for court proceedings
- Communicating with prosecutors, crime victims, and witnesses
- Preparing statistical and other periodic reports
- Locating witnesses and subjects and supporting prosecution operations
- Managing an investigative caseload
- Participating in electronic surveillance operations
- Assisting with building security
- Fielding citizen complaints
- Conducting physical surveillance
- Acting as liaison for other law enforcement agencies

It is expected that the office-holder will have thorough knowledge of the criminal procedure law, penal law, vehicle and traffic law, corrections law, and other aspects of the criminal justice library, as well as practical knowledge of common law enforcement techniques and procedures (such as use of force).  It is further expected that the office-holder maintain a physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Special Requirements for this position are as follows:
1. At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
2. There will be qualifying medical and psychological evaluations.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum of a high school diploma;  minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a detective or plainclothes investigator while employed as a police officer by a state, county, city, town or village police department within New York State, whose principal duties included the investigation of organized crime or gang activities such as graffiti,  gambling,  pornography, prostitution, sex trafficking money laundering, extortion and counterfeiting, narcotics trafficking, and violent felonies.
Such experience must include three (3) or more of the following: physical and electronic surveillance; undercover role-playing; New York State authorized wiretap investigations where the applicant was an affiant on more than three (3) wire investigations; cultivator and handler in use of more than ten (10) informants; provided testimony at trials, hearings and grand juries; obtained New York State issued search and arrest warrants.
