Interpreter/Translator- Bilingual (English-Spanish)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class clearly and accurately interprets spoken and written language and translates between English and Spanish while maintaining full message content and context.  Responsibility is included for the production of written translations of official documents.  The employee may be required to operate a variety of interpreting equipment and certify transcription reports with a formal attestation. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
The successful candidate will be asked to conduct interpretation and translation duties for the District Attorney’s Office is support of our prosecutions and investigations, including but not limited to the following:
  • Will translate and/or interpret witness and victim interviews;
  • Will translate and/or interpret victim/witness testimony presented to the Grand Jury;
  • Will translate and/or interpret videotaped statements/confessions conducted in Spanish;
  • Will translate and/or interpret various correspondence written by defendants and witnesses;
  • Will translate and/or interpret telephone calls, including controlled calls, calls made from jail, 911 calls, calls from witnesses and victims;

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Ability to read, write, and speak both English and Spanish and be able to interpret/translate from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in interpreting/translating, both orally and in writing, between English and at least one other language.
NOTE:  Completion of an interpreter/translator program may be substituted for the above experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Candidates must demonstrate language proficiency at a level deemed appropriate by the District Attorney.
Candidates may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.


SALARY AND WORK HOURS
Starting Salary is approximately $39,000.00 annually (potentially higher depending on circumstances), with scheduled pay increases. Position includes excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, and eye glass insurance, NYS pension, vacation, sick and personal time. Work hours are typically 9-5 M-F with paid holidays off.
