Job Title: Substitute Teacher
Reports To: Education Director
Location: San Francisco (Portola and Excelsior neighborhoods)
Salary Grade/Range: $22-$24 per hour, based on experience, including employer-paid health benefits for part-time employees working a minimum of 24hrs/wk.
Status: Non-Exempt On-call position (Monday to Friday; approximately 9:00am-6:00pm)

Position Summary
Family Connections is committed to nurturing each child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development from early childhood to school-age. Our goal is to ensure children and families have a smooth transition through each stage of their lives. The Substitute Teacher supports our goal to work closely with teachers and parents/caregivers to enhance their involvement in their child’s educational development. Programs include: First Steps (play group), Pop N’ Play, Pre-K, school-age programs, and childcare for our workshops and support groups.

Essential Functions
  • Assist teachers with daily management and responsibilities of classroom
  • Be consistent with the goals and the philosophy of the program
  • Get familiar with available teaching and learning material, make sure such materials are properly utilized, and make activities success-oriented
  • Maintain visual and auditory supervision of children at all times to ensure their safety in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips
  • Ensure that environment is safe, clean, clutter-free, visually aesthetic, and functional
  • Interact with children in a positive, supportive, respectful, and open-minded manner
  • Provide oversight of daily operation of the classroom, including overall safety, accident and illness prevention; positive interactions; and productive educational project-based activities
  • Develop and maintain a positive and confidential relationship with children and their parents/caregivers, including thorough communication about program and child’s progress
  • Follow mandatory reporting requirements for suspicion of child abuse or neglect
  • Follow requirements for reporting and record-keeping of injuries or accidents
  • Practice and ensure professional standards of communications within classroom, agency, and with community partners/vendors
  • Participate in in-service trainings and professional development workshops
  • Perform other duties and ad hoc projects as needed or requested by supervisor

Qualifications
  • 12 ECE units or related field in Child Development
  • Minimum two years teaching experience
  • AA in Early Childhood Education or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Bilingual in Cantonese and English or Spanish and English strongly preferred
  • Experience working effectively in diverse communities of staff and participants
  • Collaborative and self-directed, with the ability to work well in teams and independently
  • Confident and respectful classroom management skills and approach
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including listening skills
  • Professional ethics of confidentiality, discretion, and good judgment
  • LivesScan Clearance and physical health/TB clearance required to be maintained throughout employment

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional classroom and office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 25 pounds and on occasion may require lifting/carrying a child or object up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
