Position Summary
The Community Engagement Specialist will serve as an ambassador for Family Connections Centers and the community. In alignment with the department’s goals and strategies, the position designs and coordinates materials and events that increase the visibility and funding for our programs. They will work to highlight FCC’s impact and expand our network of donors, volunteers, and partners. Using program data, creative storytelling, design, and strategic thinking, the Community Engagement Specialist will engage our diverse audience, amplify FCC’s mission, and connect with our community of families, staff, funders, media, and collaborators in the education and family support fields.

This role requires excellent writing and editing skills, an enthusiastic attitude, experience with design software and a range of digital communications/media, and strong project management to meet deadlines. Our ideal candidate is passionate about FCC’s community-based work and is able to celebrate the organization through effective communications digitally and in person.

Primary Responsibilities
Community Engagement, Communications, and Outreach – 60%
  • Acquire and maintain a detailed knowledge of Family Connections’ programs and goals to successfully implement communications and marketing strategies that support and promote this work
  • Write and proof copy for newsletters, press releases, marketing materials, and internal communications
  • Adhere to the FCC style guide and support staff communications, ensuring that all materials have high-quality, error-free copy and design
  • Maintain FCC website, social media platforms, and digital communications; develop campaigns and strategies to engage our audience and grow our reach and followers on all platforms
  • Using JotForm, Eventbrite, Google Forms, etc., build event registrations, volunteer sign-ups, program forms, surveys to collect community feedback, etc.
  • Oversee the FCC Volunteer Program, creating new opportunities in partnership with FCC staff, managing information distribution and check-ins, and ensuring positive and engaging volunteer experiences
  • Staff occasional in-person outreach, fundraising, and other community events, with ability to communicate organizational goals to the public
  • Distribute clear and accurate information to program participants, funders, volunteers, staff, and stakeholders, including translations in Chinese, Spanish, and Vietnamese as needed
  • Work with program staff to collect program information, order/supervise translations, and publish calendars and marketing materials in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese
  • Design, order, and manage outreach materials, including handouts and branded swag items; equip/train staff on best use of materials and support outreach efforts
  • Capture photos/videos from programs and events, maintain photo folders, and keep website/digital platforms updated with new materials
  • Develop and utilize strategies to reach new community members, cultivate donors, recruit staff and volunteers, promote programs and enrollment, and communicate FCC opportunities
  • Strategize ways to continually improve user experience and clarity of information on website, social media, and text/email communications

Fundraising and Grants – 40%
  • Draft, edit, and support the preparation of persuasive and well-written donor solicitations
  • Draft and support the submission of grant proposals and reports, following the grant templates and grants calendar for deadlines
  • Acknowledge donations from campaigns and other sources; input donor data into Salesforce database in a timely fashion
  • Support the planning, permitting, marketing, and outreach of FCC’s fundraising and large-scale community events, working closely with volunteers, Board members, and partners

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or substantial experience in place of degree
  • 3+ years’ experience in writing/editing grant applications, copyediting, or digital and written communications
  • Excellent writing and composition skills, excellent grammar and editing abilities, strong attention to detail, and ability to convey complex messages and impact through strong, persuasive communications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment and with partners, participants, and funders
  • Critical thinking, flexibility, resourcefulness, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with a high level of detail, while staying on track for individual project requirements and deadlines
  • Experience with Constant Contact, social media communications, and WordPress preferred

COVID-19 Requirements

Work Environment
This job operates in a hybrid work environment with mandatory on-site hours at FCC’s centers in Portola and Excelsior. Some remote work is possible. Work scheduled weekdays, Monday-Friday, with occasional evening/weekend work to support community events. This role routinely uses standard computers and phones to perform work duties.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This job requires extended periods of time at a computer. The employee must lift and/or move items over 25 pounds on occasion. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
