This position is in the GWLRA Winnipeg Office. Reporting to the Director, Corporate Finance, we are looking for a leader to join the organization and support the indirect tax function and property cost allocation functions.


  • Prepare and review for monthly, quarterly and annual Commodity Tax filings, Non-Resident Withholding tax filing, parking tax filing for the property owners, GWLRA, and related companies.
  • Assist with the indirect tax audits by CRA and other government authorities.
  • Set up new tax numbers with government authorities as required.
  • Ensure compliance with indirect tax laws and regulations.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with Canada Life tax teams, working collaboratively to achieve compliance for the organization.
  • Research and provide advice on commodity tax questions from regional finance.
  • Research areas of taxation and provide recommendations to parent company for review.
  • Maintain Procurement Business Numbers (PBN) for applicable tenants for properties.
  • Review the billing and recovery of costs from properties, working with regional finance teams to adjust as required.
  • Supervise, lead and mentor staff including the coordination, delegation, and prioritization of team tasks.
  • Other duties as required.

Key Strengths and Attributes
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities
  • Ability to look at the big picture and apply technical knowledge to the business in complex organizational structures
  • Ability to teach knowledge to staff and guide interpretations
  • Research skills and familiarity with research tools to provide opinions on the application of commodity taxes
  • Technical knowledge of the Excise Tax Act
  • Ability to communicate technical information at a business user level
  • Eager to review process and identify potential process improvements
  • Strong attention to detail and able to develop and communicate complex solutions to a wide variety of stakeholders clearly and concisely

  • 2+ years of accounting/finance experience, ideally in real estate
  • Experience in dealing with CRA reviews and audits
  • CPA designation or close to completion of designation
  • Exceptional MS Excel skills (formulas + functions)
