In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to:

Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Sustainability, and working closely with senior and junior team members, the successful candidate will fill the role of Director, Corporate Sustainability.

The primary function of this position will be to help manage and evolve sustainable operations of both GWLRA and its parent company Canada Life (Real Estate).

The candidate will work in concert with the GWLRA Corporate Sustainability team to advance programming across the entire GWLRA-managed portfolio, with a particular focus on Canada Life-owned corporate properties. 

This position will interact with various internal teams, clients, consultants, industry associations, and peers to drive sustainability-related projects and reporting.


  • Help determine portfolio-level and building-level decarbonization potential in-line with GWLRA’s and Canada Life’s net-zero commitments
  • Identify, prioritize, and support the implementation of energy, water, and waste performance improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with property management and asset management teams offering technical assistance in the development of budgets and business cases for proposed capital projects
  • Aid in the drafting of request for proposals (RFP) or review of third-party service proposals for energy management and carbon managements initiatives
  • Review/revise annual energy, water, waste, and carbon reduction targets and support Net Zero scenario modelling.
  • Support energy/water audits and commissioning activities in collaboration with the Technical Services and operations teams
  • Develop tools and materials to communicate and build great sustainability-related awareness
  • Help support and participate on GWLRA’s ESG/sustainability related committees, working groups and task forces.
  • Provide input into GWLRA’s submissions into the annual GRESB Real Estate Assessment.
  • Collaborate with GWLRA’s Marketing & Communications team and contribute to the preparation of GWLRA’s Annual Review, its social media platform, and other company-wide communications materials.
  • Work with GWLRA’s third-party energy management firm as well as all property management directors in the preparation of its annual GHG Emissions Inventory and assurance process
  • Actively engage with the industry’s supporting organizations (e.g., BOMA Canada, CaGBC, REALPAC, NAIOP, etc.).

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial real estate, sustainability and/or energy management is preferred
  • Post-secondary education, preferably in engineering, architecture/planning, environmental management, or other relevant training
  • Experience with building-level energy conservation measures, measurement, and results reporting
  • Knowledge of energy management, energy audits, and decarbonization planning for buildings
  • Good understanding of building mechanical systems, such as HVAC equipment, lighting, electrical systems, building automation/control systems, and envelope
  • Exposure to low-carbon technologies, renewable energy technologies, smart building technologies, carbon offsetting, and RECs
  • LEED AP, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), CMVP, or other relevant credentials
  • Good understanding of BOMA BEST, LEED, WELL, FitWel, and/or the Zero Carbon Building Standard
  • Ability to manage, manipulate and analyze large data sets
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including a working knowledge of Access and Excel
  • Have strong interpersonal skills, and be guided by GWLRA's values of Integrity, Ambition, Empathy, and Creativity
  • Have solid technical acumen and business maturity
  • Be a self-starter, who is naturally curious, service-oriented and always looking to drive process improvements
  • Be a tenacious problem solver and critical thinker
