GPTech is looking for a Speechwriter to provide contract support to the United States Agency for International Development’s Power Africa program. Power Africa is a U.S. Government-led partnership that brings together the collective resources of over 170 public and private-sector partnerships to double the access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa. Power Africa leadership, including the Coordinator and Deputy Coordinators, deliver speeches on various platforms, sharing Power Africa’s vision, accomplishments, and goals. These speeches convey complex technical information in an engaging and relatable manner, motivating diverse audiences, from policymakers to the general public.
GPTech provides communication support to the Power Africa’s Coordinator’s Office, including the preparation of speeches for leadership. The Speech Writer will craft impactful and engaging speeches for these entities. The position will compose orations for senior leaders who participate in public-speaking engagements and tailor content according to the desired messaging strategy.
The Speechwriter will be based in the Washington, D.C, area to support the Power Africa Coordinator’s Office on immediate needs in the D.C. time zone. The position will provide services on an ad hoc basis and within tight deadlines (see Logistics below).

- Speechwriting: Research, write, edit, and rewrite speeches and other materials to be delivered or used by the Power Africa Coordinator and/or deputies in a variety of public settings, ensuring authenticity in delivery while maintaining a coherent narrative aligned with Power Africa’s mission and values.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with senior leadership and other team members to understand the context, goals, and key messages for each event. Work closely with each presenter on the delivery and tone.
- Storytelling: Develop speeches that inspire, motivate, and energize audiences. Translate complex technical and policy concepts related to the energy sector into accessible, compelling language that resonates with non-technical audiences, policymakers, and international stakeholders.
- Coaching and sounding board: Serve as a sounding board for ideas and provide coaching on speech delivery to ensure impactful presentations, considering tone, pace, and delivery.
- Adaptability: Tailor speeches to different events, audiences, and formats, ensuring the message resonates in various contexts (e.g., conferences, webinars, high-level meetings).
- Energy Sector Expertise: The Speechwriter must have a basic knowledge of the energy sector and Power Africa’s initiatives and be able to simplify technical concepts while maintaining accuracy and relevance.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in speechwriting, particularly for high-level leadership
- Proven experience in the energy sector, with a strong ability to translate technical jargon into accessible language
- Demonstrated success in crafting impactful and motivational speeches
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, international development, or a related field
- Superior editorial skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Experience working in a remote environment with international teams preferred
- Excellent communication skills in English
