GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is seeking an experienced Project Superintendent/Field Professional to support the Construction Management practice in our Livonia, Michigan (Metropolitan Detroit) office.

  • Serve as Project Superintendent/Field Professional providing on-Site construction oversight/contractor supervision for decommissioning, demolition, abatement, decontamination, renovation, remediation, hazard/regulated materials assessment and mitigation, and related projects. 
  • Supervise projects as owner’s representative/oversight and/or contractor superintendent using firm understanding of industry practice means and methods.
  • Manage field efforts on projects that include decommissioning, demolition, abatement, and environmental related construction/contracting activities with focus on safety and protection of human health and the environment.
  • Knowing, understanding, and following applicable codes, regulations, and laws.  These may include those pertaining to typical safety hazards and regulated material/environmental conditions encountered during the work.  Safety conditions may include demolition/decommissioning hazards, heavy equipment, working at heights, confined spaces, excavations, respiratory risks, documentation and professional licensing, and other OSHA requirements.   Regulated materials and environmental risks encountered during the work may include asbestos, lead, silica, PCBs, mold, mercury/mercury vapor, and similar. 
  • Review, understand, and communicate details pertaining to project plans, health and safety plans, job safety analyses/pre-task plans, technical specifications, scopes of work, method statements, project schedules, and similar field documents. 
  • Work with Site contractors, subcontractors, and client representatives to promote team-approached project delivery. 
  • When necessary, plan and execute unsupervised field tasks at direction of Project Manager/Coordinator/Engineer, such as material assessments, inspections, quantity take-offs, field estimations, sample collection, and preparation of related notes.
  • Professionally represent GZA in its key contacts with clients, sub-consultants, vendors, regulatory agencies, and the community.

Special Skills/Requirements:
  • Associate’s degree in construction management, environmental technology, engineering, environmental Science, or a related field is recommended.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a similar role within the decommissioning, demolition, abatement, decontamination, renovation, hazard/regulated materials assessment and mitigation disciplines.
  • Familiarity with the industrial/manufacturing industry, particularly automotive sector safety, quality, standards/protocol, and priority expectations is a plus. 
  • Understanding of regulations such as OSHA, waste storage/labeling/disposal regulations, AHERA, NESHAP, RCRA, TSCA, and relevant state/local regulations.
  • Experience in preparing field documentation, field reports, project tracking.
  • Capable of conducting field activities such as environmental testing, operating a hammer drill, use of a lift, climbing ladders, and traversing construction Sites safely.  Experience operating power and hand tools, lifts, and monitoring equipment a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow direction, work independently or on a team.
  • Availability to work Monday - Friday and evenings and weekends as warranted by project demands.
  • Ability to travel overnight and work remotely as warranted by project demands.
  • Candidates should have the capacity to work outdoors in all seasons through various kinds of weather.
  • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing.
  • Ideal candidate will possess the following professional traits: safety focused, ability to multi-task, take initiative and be highly motivated, work with a team of diverse engineers, technicians, clients, and contractors, direct field activities of contractors, adhere to project requirements, capacity to trouble-shoot, and demonstrate a good work ethic.

  • 10-hour OSHA Construction Industry Safety Training
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER Training
  • EPA Accredited Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor Training
  • EPA Accredited Asbestos Inspector Training
  • EPA Accredited Asbestos Project Manager Training
  • Asbestos Air Monitoring/NIOSH 582 Training
  • Valid State asbestos inspector and/or monitor license(s)
  • NIOSH 582 Sampling and Evaluating Airborne Asbestos Fibers Certification
