GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is seeking a conscientious, experienced, highly-motivated, safety-focused Safety Field Professional to support the Construction Management practice in our Livonia, Michigan (Metropolitan Detroit) office. 

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as Safety Professional within GZA’s People-Based Safety culture providing on-Site construction oversight/contractor safety oversight for decommissioning, demolition, abatement, decontamination, renovation, remediation, hazard/regulated materials assessment and mitigation, and related projects. 
  • Oversee projects as third party safety representative/oversight and/or GZA contractor safety using firm understanding of OSHA regulations and industry practice means and methods.
  • Know, understand, and follow applicable codes, regulations, and laws.  These may include those pertaining to typical safety hazards and regulated material/environmental conditions encountered during the work.  Safety conditions may include demolition/decommissioning hazards, heavy equipment, working at heights, confined spaces, excavations, respiratory risks, documentation and professional licensing, and others.   Regulated materials and environmental risks encountered during the work may include asbestos, lead, silica, PCBs, mold, mercury/mercury vapor, and others. 
  • Develop, review, and communicate detailed health and safety plans, job safety analyses/pre-task plans, safe work methodologies, evacuation and contingency plans, and similar project field documents. 
  • Become intimately familiar with both GZA and client safety systems and requirements and assist GZA project teams in understanding and complying.
  • Observe the work for hazards, risks, and safety violations, and constructively communicate observations with subject field personnel and relevant superintendents/project managers.
  • Work with Site contractors, subcontractors, and client representatives to promote team-approached project delivery with emphasis on safety.
  • Engage GZA, contractor, and client representatives on-Site to establish working relationships with field personnel, influence safe work practices, and promote GZA’s People Based Safety culture. 
  • Lead tail-gate safety talks, JSA reviews, incident reviews, and safety lessons learned sessions.
  • When necessary, lead GZA and client required safety system actions including implementation of response protocol, communication plans, incident reporting, near-miss reporting, hazard documentation, and similar.
  • Professionally represent GZA in its key contacts with clients, sub-consultants, vendors, regulatory agencies, and the community.

Special Skills/Requirements:
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) qualifications, or education/certification in a related field is recommended.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a similar role within the construction, demolition, environmental services, and/or remediation disciplines.
  • Familiarity with the industrial/manufacturing industry, particularly automotive sector safety, quality, standards/protocol, and priority expectations is a plus. 
  • Comprehensive understanding of OSHA regulations and familiarity with other safety consensus standards.
  • Familiarity with waste storage/labeling/disposal regulations, AHERA, NESHAP, RCRA, TSCA, and relevant state/local regulations a plus.
  • Experience in preparing safety related documents.
  • Capable of traversing construction Sites safely, including climbing ladders. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow direction, work independently or on a team.
  • Availability to work Monday - Friday and evenings and weekends as warranted by project demands.
  • Ability to travel overnight and work remotely as warranted by project demands.
  • Candidates should have the capacity to work outdoors in all seasons in various kinds of weather.
  • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing.


The following training is not required but is a plus:
  • 10 or 30-hour OSHA Construction Industry Safety Training
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER Training
  • Valid State asbestos inspector and/or monitor license(s)
