Classroom Assistant I

STATUS:                               Temp/Part-Time non-exempt,
                                              20 hours a week – 5 days a week for 4 hours Noon to 4 p.m.

This is an entry level position. The primary function of the position is to work with students K-5th grades in the Afterschool Homework Help Program helping with reading, spelling, and math each day. Work may also include helping these students with catch up assignments they have missed. Once homework is done staff will also work with students in play areas until they have gone home or been pick up for the day (4:00 p.m.). Cleaning of classroom is also part of the position. Hiring dependent upon drug screening and formal background check. Negative COVID test within 3-5 days of hire also required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Work closely within the Afterschool Homework Help Program working five days a week as a classroom assistant to the Director and with the students.
  2. Work together with Education Director, Lead tutor, staff, parents, and students to maintain a friendly, happy, positive, successful, and organized environment.
  3. Maintain confidentiality requirements.
  4. Employee will work afternoons five (5) days a week.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  1. Must be 18 or older.
  2. Should have high school diploma. College degree or some college work preferred. High school transcripts required or current college transcripts.
  3. Work experience with or around young children and teenagers is preferred.
  4. Knowledgeable of behavior management skills that are applicable at all age levels.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and Chemehuevi Tribal Staff.
  6. Ability to enforce rules and set boundaries.
  7. Strong written and communication skills.

Other Requirements:
  1. Submit to Pre-Employment Drug Testing, background check, and finger printing.
  2. Must submit an official transcript or take the Accuplacer Exam at MCC to submit prior to hire.
  3. Comply with Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
  4. Ability to work evening and weekends if required.
  5. Ability to travel and must possess a valid drivers’ license.
  6. May be required to attend continuing education training as deemed appropriate.
  7. Must have the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, write, lift to 50 pounds, and speak to twenty students or more in a fast-paced academic environment. Participate in CPR/First Aid, Food Handlers, and other Safety Trainings when provided.
