Cline Family Cellars a family-owned and operated certified sustainable winery based in Sonoma at the gateway to Sonoma Wine Country from San Francisco.  We’re celebrating our 40th birthday this year as leadership pivots towards its 2nd generation.  Cline is known for producing highly lauded noble varietals, Zinfandels, and Rhone-style wines sourced from our vineyards in Sonoma-Carneros, Petaluma Gap, and Oakley. We are currently growing the portfolio in Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.  Jacuzzi is known for small lot winemaking of Italian varietals.  Grounded in sustainability and family, we are always on the hunt for good talent we can grow in-house.

To develop these programs to the fullest we are searching for a full-time QC/laboratory technician to start November 1st with flexibility in start date for the right candidate.

An ability to learn, take notes and retain new procedures is more important than experience in all tasks. Training will be provided for any areas needed.

The QC/Lab Technician is responsible for the efficient and professional execution of bottling QC and laboratory operations, while promoting a team-oriented environment within the winemaking department.  This position works with the Lab Manager to ensure the wines produced are of the highest quality and enhance the company’s reputation.  Integral to bottling prep and QC, including prepping bottling tanks and performing line checks.  Lab tech will perform routine analysis of grapes, juice, and wine.  Maintains daily wine analysis records and spreadsheets.  Set-up wine trials as needed for the winemaking staff.  Trains interns and other staff when required.  Adheres to Cline’s operating procedures and safety practices.  While your primary responsibility in this role will be regarding QC and lab work, you will have opportunities to learn other topics related to enology and winemaking. 

Bottling QC Responsibilities:
  • Assures the bottling tank is in spec, prepped, and ready each morning; including appropriate sulfur, dissolved oxygen, and CO2
  • Write work orders for wine additions based on analysis results as needed
  • Perform bottling QC checks; including line startup, bottle capacity, in-bottle DO and CO2, verify corks and screwcaps are applied correctly and effectively, analysis of wine in-bottle, label and packaging checks
  • General assistance and monitoring integrity of wine and packaging throughout operation of bottling line

Lab Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Wine analyses using an Anton Paar Alcolyzer, Hach dissolved oxygen meter, Admeo Y15 analyzer, Anton Paar DMA, and an autotitrator for both pH/TA and sulfur
  • Perform all analysis and QC tasks in a timely manner – including routine barrel and tank analysis, bottling analysis, and cellar samples
  • Heat and cold stability checks in preparation for bottling
  • Perform daily lab instrumentation start-up and shut-down, including updating daily records of equipment calibration and standardization and reporting any equipment problems
  • Timely and accurate data entry of analysis into logbooks, Excel spreadsheets, and NAV database
  • Timely and rapid communication of key analysis to the Winemaking Team
  • Prepare and standardize lab solutions
  • Composite barrel sampling for winemaking tastings and for blending
  • Create lab blends for blend trials as needed
  • General housekeeping and clean up tasks daily

Harvest Duties:
  • Process vineyard grape samples for analysis and maintain a clean setup; communicate grape analysis to winemakers
  • Perform analysis on must and juice samples – including Brix, YAN, pH and TA
  • Monitor fermentations daily with Brix and temperature checks, as well as sensory analysis
  • Assist with cellar tasks as needed – including nutrient additions to fermentations

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Chemistry, Fermentation Science, Enology, or similar
  • Previous wine lab and harvest experience
  • Must have basic cellar operation and winemaking knowledge
  • Advanced English communication skills, including reading and writing
  • Verbal Spanish communication a plus
  • Competent math and analytical skills
  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience with Microsoft Navision a plus
  • Self-motivated, strong attention to detail, ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Positive attitude committed to accuracy, consistency, organization, and open communication
  • Weekend and overtime work required during harvest, August to November
  • Occasional overtime outside of harvest, able to work any shift with short notice throughout year
  • Ability to intermittently lift and/or carry 0-50 lbs.
  • Ability to intermittently push and/or pull 0-50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in an environment with fluctuating temperatures and can be noisy
  • Intermittent sitting and standing, walking on level surfaces and intermittent walking on unlevel surfaces
  • Intermittent bending, twisting, and climbing
  • Intermittent reaching above and below shoulder
  • Intermittent grasping, squeezing, and fine hand manipulation
