NAVATEK, a privately-owned defense contractor, is seeking a Senior Engineer to work on a range of exciting Department of Defense research and design challenges. The candidate will have the opportunity to help lead ground-breaking research across a diverse range of applications, including: digital twins and autonomous systems. The candidate will also have the opportunity to help steer the electrical systems engineering and construction for a range of vehicles and autonomous systems for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Army. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, and 10+ years of experience in the design and analysis of electrical and electro-mechanical systems and controls. Must be willing to work on a range of projects including: basic and applied research, ships, submarines, autonomous vehicles, and electrical grids. Candidate should be able to thrive in a research environment – identify technical gaps in the state-of-the-art and translate client needs into system or research requirements, manage a project from conceptualization through proof-of-concept, and clearly communicate results to stakeholders. An understanding of naval vessels or electrical power grids a plus. Software development experience a plus. Periodic travel between our offices in Honolulu, HI, Portland, ME, Providence, RI, and Arlington, VA will be necessary for project management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Research and development: problem identification, requirements definition, new theory development, analysis, experimentation.
- Engineering of mechanical systems and system of systems including hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, and structural.
- Software and code development.
- Presentation of systems in written technical data packages and design reviews with the customer.
- Construction oversight of system specific installation, benchmarking, and dockside testing.
- Test support of systems during builder’s trials.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or related field
- 10+ years of professional experience in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Direct experience applying machine learning and data analytics to problems in engineering system design. Experience working with “digital twins” or “virtual twins” is a plus.
- Direct experience with hardware/software design and implementation for data collection.
- Practical experience in modern software engineering methods and the respective tooling, proficiency with programming languages (C++, Java, Python, C#.NET), and in web technologies (HTTP, HTTP/2, WebSockets, HTML5, JS, WebGL).
- Focus on delivering working results meeting the given functional requirements and quality attributes.
SKILLS/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
Required:
- Computer aided design (CAD) and ability to read and create engineering drawings.
- Coding: some ability in an object-oriented language (e.g. C++, python).
- Instrumentation and sensor data collection.
- Clear technical writing and communication.
- Digital twins, or virtual twins, for engineering systems.
- Machine learning, data analytics.
- Augmented reality/virtual reality.
- Strong understanding of the governing physics of an engineered system: e.g. electrodynamics, thermodynamics, structural mechanics, hydraulics.
- Experience with marine systems.
- Experience contributing to proposal writing for new business.
