NAVATEK LLC, a privately-owned defense contractor, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer with a solid mechanics focus to work on a range of exciting Department of Defense research and design challenges. The candidate will have the opportunity to help lead ground-breaking research across a diverse range of applications. The ideal candidate will have a B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, and 5+ years of experience in the design and analysis of structures including those composed of composite material systems. Must be willing to work on a range of projects including: basic and applied research, ships, submarines, autonomous vehicles, and structural design. Candidate should be able to thrive in a research environment – identify technical gaps in the state-of-the-art and translate client needs into system or research requirements, manage a project from conceptualization through proof-of-concept, and clearly communicate results to stakeholders. Software development experience a plus.

  • Research and development: problem identification, requirements definition, new theory development, analysis, experimentation.
  • Design and engineering of prototype systems for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Army, with a focus on composites and advanced material systems.
  • Research and formulate theories in engineering analysis and design science.
  • Capture research in new methods and engineering software tools; conduct testing and document results.
  • Presentation of work in written technical data packages and design reviews with the customer.
  • Support of prototype testing and demonstration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent from an accredited college or university
  • 5+ years’ experience with focus on structural methods and analysis for composite materials (advanced degree can be substituted for years of experience).
  • Experience with US Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and/or Air Force a plus.

  • Knowledge of composite materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Solid foundation in mechanics.
  • Understanding of finite element modeling techniques. Finite element analysis related coursework or formal training is a strong plus.
  • Finite element analysis using commercial software package (e.g. Abaqus, ANSYS, Nastran).
  • Computer aided design (CAD) using commercial software (e.g. SolidWorks, Rhino).
  • Programming skill in an object-oriented language (e.g. C++, Python).
  • Clear technical writing and communication.

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residence.
  • Must show proof of work eligibility in the United States.
  • Good attitude; must be a team player, but also efficient working individually.
  • Possess the interest and flexibility to be involved with interdisciplinary engineering tasks.
  • Able to demonstrate initiative and possess time management skills to meet deadlines.

This position will be located in Portland, Maine, or optionally, Bangor, Maine. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing an employee background check and post-offer drug screen.
