PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Facility & Refrigeration Group Lead, this position is responsible for performing journey-level work in the design, installation, construction, modification, repair and maintenance of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems; act as lead worker to other classified staff in the area; and perform related work as required.  Ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of all plant Electrical components and equipment in assigned areas.  Responsible for adhering to all safety regulations and company policies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (other duties may be assigned as needed):

  1. Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.

  2. Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.

  3. Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.

  4. Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.

  5. Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.

  6. Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.

  7. Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.

  8. Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.

  9. Use a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment.

  10. Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment, such as motors.

  11. Perform business management duties such as maintaining records and files, preparing reports and ordering supplies and equipment.

  12. Work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures.

  13. Place conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.

  14. Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit and moving and lifting heavy objects.

  15. Provide preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services.

  16. Provide assistance during emergencies by operating floodlights and generators, placing flares, and driving needed vehicles.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None; will work with outside Contractors for repairs and maintenance related activities.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Individuals must operate and use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely; assemble, install, maintain, and repair electrical apparatuses; make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials of electrical work; analyze and respond safely and appropriately to emergency situations; perform preventive maintenance on switch gears and transformers; read and comprehend plans and blueprints as appropriate to trade; perform heavy physical labor; train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area; follow and give oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Requires 3 years of dedicated ammonia operator experience.
  3. Knowledge of Electrical, instrumentation, schematics, hydraulics.
  4. Mechanical aptitude in order to offer technical direction in areas of welding, safety, machinery repair, speed changes, determining equipment capacity, determining cause of equipment failure, etc.
  5. Knowledge of basic programmable logic controls (PLC).
  6. PC proficiency (Word, Excel, e-mail).

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  1. Above average verbal and written communication skills.

  2. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with personnel at all levels of the organization. Ability to speak, write and read English.

  3. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  1. Must have strong math skills and apply basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

  1. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

  2. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  1. None; prefer a licensed electrician but not mandatory.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  1. Ability to work in fast paced environment and continuously meet deadlines.

  2. Ability to work off shifts as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to air conditioning. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be occasionally exposed to cold temperatures of 36 degrees and heat when working inside the production facility.  The employee will be working inside a production facility where the use of chemical substances are present and used. Employee's work is also subject to the pressures of time constraints and deadlines. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and loud when working in the production facility
