To support the on-going growth of our business, we are currently seeking a highly motivated, committed, and energetic Scrap Metals Buyer/Scale Operator to join our team. 

Reporting to our Scale Supervisor this position is responsible for maintaining current sources and generating new sources of scrap metal from the market.  This is not your typical Buyer position, you will be following the scrap metal market, operating the scale on-site and interacting with our customers one-on-one to purchase the scrap metals brought into our facility.


The hours of work for this position are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and (most) Saturdays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal record check. The starting hourly rate for this position is $22.00.

Key Responsibilities
  • Gather appropriate local market information for scrap metal, monitor cost trends and availability of supply
  • Maintain current customer base and generate new business and sources of scrap metal
  • Interact with various departments with regards to the proper inspection, grading and quality of materials delivered to site
  • Assess, identify, and grade the quality of ferrous and non-ferrous metals for purchase
  • Take responsibility for increasing purchase volumes and the protection and expansion of profit margins
  • Assist existing and future customers with questions regarding the pricing of materials and types of material accepted
  • Provide a professional and courteous service to all internal and external customers
  • Effectively communicate internal scrap quality and acceptance procedures and ensure strict compliance with current regulations and policies
  • Conduct various Scale Operation tasks and evaluate incoming products by way of; identifying the contents of each load, operating the incoming scale to determine weight, directing customers to the appropriate areas for unloading, etc.
  • Calculate pricing of material volumes in multiple units, both metric and imperial, while ensuring accuracy for customer payment
  • Review and understand all Best Work Practices, Safe Job Procedures, and Job Safety Analysis for his/her tasks
  • Attend, and partake in all Toolbox and monthly safety meetings
  • In the long term, participate in the development of a state-of-the-art recycling facility
  • Other projects and duties as assigned by Supervisor

Education and Experience
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a Buyer position, preferably in scrap metal or steel industry, is not a requirement but will be considered an asset
  • Prior experience operating an industrial scale would also be considered an asset
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills is a must
  • Proficient in the use of computers and software such as MSWord, Excel, and Outlook
  • Highly detail oriented, with exceptional organizational and time management skills is a must
