POSITION DESCRIPTION

As the Partnership moves into its second decade, we must sustain and deepen our efforts to support the school communities we serve and engage them in our vital work. This requires the deep, values-based support of those we work with most often -- our educators. The Director of Educator Engagement will be responsible for developing and delivering on a strategy to build and maintain strong relationships with the Partnership’s 700+ educators, empowering them to take ownership and action for the Partnership and their shared values with the Partnership. The Director will take a community organizing approach to craft a strategy and ladder of engagement for educators, building a broad base and leadership pipeline of educators who are ready to stand up for the Partnership’s mission. The Director will work cross-functionally across the organization, connecting the work of engaging educators to our advocacy, academic, and operational workstreams.

The Director of Educator Engagement will be someone who is excited to keep these values in mind when executing day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

This position will require being in schools often (approximately 40% of the time) throughout the fall when they reopen, but working remotely otherwise, as the Partnership home office remains closed. As such, this position requires living in the Los Angeles area.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director’s key duties and responsibilities include the following areas: 

Create and deliver on a strategy for educator engagement that builds ownership for the Partnership mission in our teacher corps (50%) 

  • Develop a strategic plan and budget for educator engagement

  • Lead a cross-functional teacher engagement committee to set and meet ambitious goals

  • Facilitate a teacher-centered design process to develop programming and engagement opportunities for educators

  • Work cross-collaboratively with the academic team, school talent team, communications team, and family and student engagement, to build a consistent Partnership brand for educators 

  • Build relationships directly with key teacher leaders as Partnership ambassadors on their school sites, providing training, support and escalating opportunities for deeper engagement

  • Build a strategy for engaging with other educators organizations 

  • Develop a strategy for listening to and collecting feedback from our educators

  • Use data from the Partnership Feedback Survey for educators to inform and improve strategic decisions over time

 

Support special projects related to building the Partnership’s influence (50%)

  • Work across all internal Partnership teams to support educator engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key partners and stakeholders for our educator engagement work

  • Support the development of organizational positions and statements related to educator engagement

  • Identify key opportunities in the landscape for influence, advocacy and action related to educator engagement

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • At least 5 years of successful full-time teaching experience preferred

  • Experience in community organizing, movement building or campaign organizing

  • Experience managing cross-functional teams across multiple teams and levels toward shared goals

  • Experience serving as a face of an organization to external partners

  • Experience setting and driving strategy in an entrepreneurial environment

 

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Strong skills in relationship building with educators, including understanding educators concerns and building shared vision

  • Strong skills in developing and driving campaigns that lead people to take action

  • Political savvy and demonstrated track record of effectively navigating complex power dynamics and building coalitions

  • Ability to establish a clear vision and strategy that is mission aligned, sets measurable goals and developing coalitions/committees and activities to maintain alignment with this vision

  • Ability to lead change management processes by identifying necessary shifts in a timely manner, involving key stakeholders in the planning process, promoting buy-in & follow-through, and adjusting course as needed

  • Ability to build diverse and inclusive teams, including promoting transparent decision making, navigating conflict, and fostering psychological safety

  • Skills in leveraging opportunities to advance or promote organizational goals and expand impact, and addressing short term needs with the longevity of the organization in mind

  • Knowledge of the LA education and political landscape

  • Knowledge of education systems and classroom practice

  • Knowledge of effective advocacy and organizing tactics/strategy

The Partnership has recently completed a thorough study of market-competitive salaries, and has applied the learning from that study to salary offers for all home office positions. Our goal is to ensure that pay is fair for all staff members, both considering the market and considering pay equity among staff in similar roles in the organization. The Partnership offers a robust benefits package including employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance and a 403(b) retirement program. This is a full time, year-round position.
