The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools’ Controller is a new position that reports to the Sr. VP of Finance & Business Affairs (F&BA) and is primarily responsible for the organization’s accounting operations, records, and reporting, in both strategic and tactical ways. In the most recently closed year, the Partnership earned $22M in revenue, booked $14M in expenses, issued 173 W-2s and 342 1099s, and held net assets of $50M.
The Controller will partner closely with two Managers of F&BA, both of whom cover scopes of work that extend beyond finance and accounting. The F&BA Team is lean and mighty, serves as a hub of information and action, and has many cross-functional staff and stakeholder touchpoints. Since the F&BA charge is to ensure the organization’s continued legal and financial health, the F&BA Team’s quantitative performance metrics are based on speed, accuracy, and transparency, and the team’s qualitative metrics are based on enabling pursuit of the mission, building shared ownership, and honoring lived experiences.
The Controller will serve as the primary point person for all financial and compliance matters both internal and external to the organization, and will recognize that F&BA enable pursuit of the mission. To be successful in the role, the Controller must be mission driven, have high integrity, maintain an expert level of knowledge in the field, be comfortable shifting between big picture ideas and minute details, lead with grace, take an asset-based approach to coaching others, comfortable in a fast-paced environment, prioritize effectively, and foster an environment of psychological safety.

The Controller’s key duties and responsibilities include the following areas:
Finance & Accounting (85%)
  • Oversee, review, and maintain accurate financial data and financial statement preparation, reported regularly, on time, and with a high degree of transparency
  • Manage the annual budget development cycle, fiscal year transition, audit, and tax filings; monthly close and budget v. actuals processes; internal/external reporting; and supporting document control
  • Conducting internal audits and ad hoc financial analyses as needed
  • Ensure all filings with oversight agencies are accurate and on time (e.g. W-3, 1096, 941, 199, 990, etc.)
  • Continuously learn about and incorporate oversight agency requirements (e.g. SB973, ASU No. 2020-07, etc.) into processes and remain knowledgeable and proactive about new and future legislation to ensure organizational compliance
  • Review, develop, and revise policies and procedures to balance compliance requirements, the team’s needs, and the capacity available
  • Ensure internal controls effectively meet requirements and recommend revisions as needed, including monitoring and working with the team to build their capacity and understanding to ensure compliance (ideally applying a liberatory design approach)
  • Provide oversight, guidance, and training for the F&BA Team to continuously improve standard operating procedures that adhere to regulatory requirements and professional standards, incorporate feedback,  and optimize speed, accuracy, and transparency, all within an environment of trust and support
  • Partner with Sr. VP of F&BA to establish financial benchmarks, including modeling, evaluation of revenue streams, and cash management
  • Guide financial decisions by applying organization policies and procedures to the current economic landscape
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed
  • Performs other ad hoc projects as assigned
Business Affairs (15%)
  • Oversee annual filings (e.g. Form 700, Conflicts of Interest), periodic updates (e.g. workers comp audit), occasional projects (e.g. EDD), and regular deadlines (e.g. payroll and reimbursement deadlines)
  • Partner with others on legal documents, including contracts, to ensure articles ensuring compliance and risk are adopted
Minimally qualified applicants:
Role Specific Knowledge
  • Bachelor’s degree (required); Master’s Degree a plus; CPA highly preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in Accounting, preferably in a non-profit or school setting
  • Expert level knowledge and understanding of non-profit accounting principles (GAAP, FASB, etc.) and regulatory agency requirements (State Attorney General, IRS, etc.)

  • Able to relay nuanced financial information to audiences of all financial literacy levels
