JOB SUMMARY
Provide Tier 2/3 Support for the Information Technology Department through working knowledge of infrastructure operations and maintenance in a server environment. Assists project teams in the planning, designing and implementing phases of projects; responsible for effective installation/configurations, operation and maintenance of servers, server-based applications, storage systems, backup systems, identity systems, communication systems and related equipment. The Systems Administrator II will implement and maintain system policies that apply to services, computers and servers to ensure the security of the server environment. Administration includes, but is not limited to, planning, designing and maintaining the Active Directory infrastructure, including group policies, Azure integration and domain management. Provide innovative technical ideas and solutions to the Information Technology Department and works closely with the Information Technology Director, network infrastructure team and applications team to define requirements that lead to system changes or the acquisition of third-party systems.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from the Information Technology Director.
Guides lower-level positions within the system administration team. The position requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment and initiative. Position receives assignments in the form of general objectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Administer server systems, including application, storage, SQL and GIS servers.
Coordinate application of patches, security policies and OS upgrades.
Administer Microsoft Hyper-V and VMW, server virtualization systems, in an extensively virtualized environment.
Daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
Configuration, administration and technical support for servers, storage, data backup and communication systems.
Server Administration, including but not limited to, installation, configuration, security and performance monitoring.
Monitor systems for security threats or unauthorized users and utilize endpoint security systems to ensure data integrity and restrictive access to approved users.
Configure, maintain and support the storage area network (SAN), and server virtualization initiatives.
Monitor and tune systems to achieve optimum performance levels.
Provide advanced-level technical support for resolving end-user application issues.
Provide technical direction as needed to Information Technology staff members.
Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
Contribute to and maintain system standards and disaster recovery solutions.
Research and recommend innovative and automated approaches to system administration tasks.
Conducts research regarding computer hardware, software and related equipment, provides recommendations and obtains vendor information.
Plans, coordinates, implements and participates in assigned projects.
Provide end-user, desktop and audio/video support.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Recent hands-on and practical work experience in configuring, maintaining and installing PC systems and servers in a networked environment.
LAN, WAN, SAN and Internet access technologies.
Microsoft Windows network services, network infrastructure, internet access technologies, Microsoft SQL, IIS, Active Directory and complex integrated systems.
Practical experience with recent versions of Microsoft Server, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Hyper-V.
Practical experience with recent versions of VMWare Esxi.
Good project management skills and substantial exposure to project-based work structures.
Strong technical knowledge of the architecture and topology for software, hardware and networks.
Strong technical knowledge of network and server operating systems.
Strong analytical, conceptual and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to:
Install, configure, upgrade and maintain enterprise-class systems, including but not limited to, server operating systems.
Work a rotating on-call schedule, including after hours and weekends, depending on workload and project cutover schedules.
Align technical and business needs.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Experience
Three (3) or more years of increasingly responsible direct hands-on experience as a Microsoft Windows Server administrator in an enterprise domain environment.
Three (3) or more years of increasingly responsible direct hands-on experience with VMWare ESXi.
Experience supporting municipal government applications is preferred.
Training:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or closely related field, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate Texas Driver's License within three (3) months of employment.
Information Technology Infrastructure Library certification a plus.
Possession of a recent (2016 or later) Microsoft Server Certification.
