JOB SUMMARY
To supervise skilled and semi-skilled equipment mechanics and equipment service workers involved in the repair and maintenance of Transit de­partment vehicles; to participate in major and minor mechanical repairs to Transit vehicles.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Transit Manager. Exercises direct supervision over equipment maintenance staff.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES -Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Supervise journey level and semi-skilled mechanics; assign work to mechanics; assist the Transit Manager in day-to-day supervision of activities.

Inspect work in progress and upon completion with policies, procedures and standard trade practices.

Train, motivate and evaluate staff; prepare and present em­ployee performance reviews; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures; recommend employee terminations; approve time cards and expense reports.

Assist in the preparation and administration of the Transit Budget.

Diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on Transit vehicles.

Overhaul, repair and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches.

Tune up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors.

Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches or oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechan­isms and related parts and equipment.

Prepare and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches.

Maintain work, time and material records, inventory and master vehicle maintenance records.

Assist and advise other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repair as required.

Maintain mental capacity which allows the capabilities to:
  • exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under stressful circumstances
  • evaluate various options and alternatives and choose an appro­priate and reasonable course of action.

Maintain physical condition which will allow the capability to perform the following:
  • running, walking, bending over or standing for extended periods of time
  • climbing stairs or ladders
  • moving, lifting, and carrying loads of approximately 25 - 100 pounds.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception   for:
  • making observations
  • reading and writing
  • operating necessary and assigned equipment
  • communicating with others.

Recommend the purchase of shop equipment and assist in the devel­opment of specifications; and assist in the development and review of Transit vehicle specifications.

Insure the adherence to safe work practices by maintenance person­nel.

Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
Tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of Transit vehicles.

Operation and care of internal combustion engines.

Operating and repair characteristics of the entire range of Transit vehicles.

Safe work practices.

Principles and practices of personnel supervision, training and evaluation.

Principles of budget preparation and administration.

Ability to:
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Supervise, train and evaluate assigned personnel.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
           
Perform minor and major mechanical work on mechanical equipment.

Use a variety of shop and repair records.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
           
Perform journey level equipment mechanical work including the trouble-shooting of equipment for both major and minor repair work.

Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.

Continue personal development via higher education and attendance at appropriate workshops and short courses.

Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:
  • exhaust fumes
  • confined work places
  • hazards associated with working in traffic.
  • various hazardous chemicals such as fuels, oils and solvents.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way would be:

Experience:
Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience performing   journey level automotive and heavy equipment mechanic work, preferably including one (1) year in a lead supervisory capacity.

Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in automotive and equipment maintenance or a related field.

License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver's License.

              NOTE: Regular attendance is deemed an essential duty for this position.
