The Care Parent Network is a one-stop family resource center serving families of children with disabilities and special health care needs.

*The Family Support Specialist is a parent or primary caregiver of a child with an intellectual or developmental disability who provides support to parents in our network to ensure that families understand and receive support in accessing appropriate services for their child. *

A Family Support Specialist provides individualized, intensive, one-to-one emotional support in a confidential, non-judgmental manner, assisting families to identify strengths, needs, and priorities. The Family Support Specialist also assists with preparation and dissemination of written agency resource materials, maintenance of the mailing list and database, and helping parents organize the child’s records in a Care Notebook. The position involves community outreach and training activities, program documentation, meeting deadlines, performing intake procedures and adhering to confidentiality policies. It is also essential that the person in this position demonstrates respect for cultural and individual differences in interacting with families, outside personnel and other professionals.

Minimum qualifications include:
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • A demonstrated commitment to the family empowerment model.
  • Must be able to communicate well verbally and in writing, in English and using computer systems.
  • Knowledge of Early Start, IDEA, Lanterman Act, health care system and related laws and regulations.
  • Valid CA Driver’s license with a good driving record and a car to use for work purposes.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination - subject to religious or medical exemption requests.

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: Must have experience as a parent or primary caregiver of a child with defined needs in at least one area, though ideally in multiple areas of service. The service areas include: education/special education, Mental Health, Juvenile Justice and fragile medical needs. Must be able to work collaboratively and effectively with those services in a team setting.

Hours: 10 hours per week. Possibility of increased hours as funding becomes available. 

Compensation: $22/hour depending on experience and education

Location: Providing services throughout Contra Costa County.
