We are looking for an experienced Scientific Director to join our team in Tacoma, WA. The Scientific Director will share responsibilities for laboratory related functions with the current scientific leadership team, and will offer both technical and administrative support. 

Essential Functions:
  • Work with current scientific leadership team to expand the strategic plan for the laboratory
  • Work with scientific leadership team to develop and maintain systems that ensure the technical competency of laboratory personnel, as required by the various accrediting agencies
  • Help ensure that the laboratory meets all standards and requirements of, and maintain accreditation with the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and licensing for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)
  • Ensure the laboratory maintains compliance with all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards
  • With current scientific leadership team: spear-head and help implement various special projects within the laboratory, including the ongoing evaluation of new technologies.
  • With current scientific leadership team: respond to questions about test results and interpretation of laboratory data and provide related consulting. Direct research and development projects.
  • Attend regional and national meetings and conferences related to the industry. Represent the Company at seminars, industry meetings, and other appropriate technical forums.
  • Actively participate in Laboratory Operations meetings.
  • With current scientific leadership team: review, edit, and approve all laboratory procedures, maintenance manuals, protocols, QA/QC procedures and records, and other documents to ensure compliance with CLIA or other regulatory agencies or certifying bodies (CAP/SAMSHA).
  • Continually help review procedures and protocols to improve turnaround time, lower costs, and improve the quality of the Company’s testing services.
  • Specify in writing the responsibilities and duties of all laboratory personnel, including assistant directors.
  • Support the laboratory's quality and continuous improvement process. Help to develop, maintain, and monitor the laboratory’s quality assurance program. Act as a member of the Quality Improvement Committee and hold regular meetings.
  • Participate in the continuing education of laboratory staff through presentation of courses in pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, instrumental analysis, forensic toxicology and related areas.
  • Provide legal testimony for laboratory findings and act as an expert witness.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education and Experience:
  • A Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, pharmacology, or toxicology.
  • Diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (D-AFBT) preferred.
    Certified as a Diplomat by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in Toxicological Chemistry will be considered.
  • Appropriate experience in analytical forensic toxicology including experience with the analysis of biological material for drugs of abuse.
  • Appropriate training and/or experience in forensic applications of analytical toxicology which qualifies the individual as an expert witness in forensic toxicology.
  • Appropriate experience in a urine drug testing or similar laboratory.
  • Appropriate experience in the analysis of alternate matrices (oral fluid, blood, DBS) desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Expert ability to understand analytical techniques and procedures.
  • Expert ability to understand laboratory instrumentation.
  • Expert ability to understand certification requirements for SAMHSA, CAP (College of American Pathologists), and other relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Expert ability to understand the function of a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and other laboratory computer systems.
  • Expert ability to communicate ideas.
  • Advanced ability to teach others.
  • Expert ability to write technical procedures.
  • Expert ability to write technical reports
